UCLA Transfer Appeals 2019

@VeeJoePerra I agree, but keep in mind that this was in 2013 (6 years ago). UCLA Admissions probably had different criteria for appeals than now. I just looked further down the thread. That person most likely got in with their appeal not only because it was different, but because of their GPA. The person you mentioned who was skeptical about their appeal posted a link to another appeal that was well written but got rejected. However, that student whose appeal got rejected appealed for the same major as the Steve Jobs student, but, their GPA was significantly lower (3.52) which could have also played a factor for their appeal t be rejected despite it being well written. BUT, all of what I said there was what the Steve Jobs student explained as to why their appeal got accepted. We’ll never know what really happened.

I understand it might be frustrating, but don’t worry about some random person’s appeal online. They have their own stories while we have our own. Remember that everyone’s appeal that is accepted is gone through case by case. We’re all stressed and trying our best, I know. But don’t focus on what the writing from someone else was about. It’ll only make your mind tense.

Although I won’t lie, sometimes I question the process of appeals lol

The Steve Jobs part and I accept UCLA line came across as smug IMHO.

@Ohm888 Yeah that part really threw me off when I read it lol

omg that appeal post reads like a lame fiction and i am 100000% sure it was just lie.

“I was the one choosing ucla in my appeal!” uhhh pretty sure that ship sailed when ucla literally decided to specifically NOT choose him for their school. the purpose of an appeal letter is TO ASK THE SCHOOL FOR RECONSIDERATION. When you submit an appeal, you are asking UCLA to reconsider their CHOICE on YOU.

i bet he just wrote that to cope with rejection, its actually a pretty common method. imma just keep it real and be honest in that his appeal was poorly written, if it was even real to begin with.

@HarleyTheQuinn I know, I kind of went off a bit. Sorry about that. But honestly, it’s ridiculous to see an appeal like that get accepted. They did say that their appeal got in because of their GPA, but that seems like a lie too. The point of an appeal is to provide newfound information. Even if other appeals were “cookie cutters” like they said, it’s still meant to explain why your GPA is low, or why you want to be reconsidered. The Steve Jobs part and I am pleased to inform you that you have been accepted as my university of choice!" was just cringeworthy. That’s just my opinion. But idk if @orange283 would ever come back on here

You never know what is real and what is not up here. He did have other interesting things, so who knows.

I’m really hoping UCLA will release a large amount of their responses to appeals on June 1st and then continue rolling.

Hello guys, i mentioned earlier in this thread that i applied to ucla as a freshman and a transfer. got rejected both times. however, my units were miscounted thus denying me automatically. I wrote my appeal 3 weeks ago and this morning, i got accepted to UCLA!! I already SIR’d. I really hope the best for you guys! stay hopeful !

@vanter101 Congrats, thats awesome! I had the same situation with unit count, that definitely gives me hope. Thanks for the update, good luck in school!

@vanter101 This question is kinda dumb but are you sure? it says on my portal the following:

"We have received your request to reconsider our admission decision for Fall Quarter 2019. We are in the process of reviewing your record again.

Please note that a decision may not be reached until after June 1st so please plan accordingly. Once a decision has been made, the result of your appeal will be posted on this site."

If this doesn’t apply then Congratulations! I’m just a little skeptical because the portal itself says a decision may not be reached until after June 1st. I guess this wasn’t 100% true maybe. Idk I’m just a little confused that’s all.

@vanter101 how did you update the missing grades? I realized they’re missing my winter grades and I received all As in those courses and they still haven’t been updated

@UniCoIn You have to call the school admissions office and talk to someone, most of them will update it for you and call the main UC App help number and they will update if for you too. Once you do that you wont be able to see the changes they have made.

@imstressin hi thanks for your reply, also prior to the decisions even coming out I was requested for a unofficial transcript from all the colleges I attended but it didn’t specify from which uc but when I called the General uc application number they said the specific uc requests those so idk lol

@UniCoIn I would recommend you call all of the UC admissions offices that your appealing or waiting to hear back from. I have called and they will advise you about the notes on your application, and how to move forward. You can also ask if they had requested the transcripts because it would probably be in the notes on your file. Almost all the colleges I’ve called were extremely helpful (Excluding UCB) and will give insight into how you should move forward or who to talk to.

@vanter101 Congratulations! Would you mind to tell us your major and when did you submit it ? It would be helpful to know if they are reviewing major by alphabet order or not.

yeah so when i talked to them, they said that they start looking at the applications when they are submitted. i woke up this morning and got an email from “ UCLA Finacial Aid and Scholarships” on there it said “congratulations on your admission to UCLA” and i wasn’t sure if i got accepted. so i went on my portal and it read “ We have reviewed your appeal for admission, and we are please to offer you admission to UCLA for the Fall Quarter 2019” and from there i got my id and SIR’d @GoodAfternoonSir

@unicoln so i was missing my grades for the summer session. and i noticed in march. so i called the uc application center and sent them an email. they got back to me saying they never received it, and to put it in the additional comment section. and even so when i called ucla, they told me they never received it. so i provided documents such as my unofficial transcripts and the email the UC application center sent me.

@ityelisabeth yeah so i submitted my appeal on May 7th and they got back to me May 25th. I got admitted into my first major, American Literature and Culture; however, I plan on hopefully changing my major. You can change your major as a transfer only if the department allows it.

@vanter101 OMG wow congrats!!! Looks like they really wanted to have you! You deserved it. It’s making me excited but nervous about my appeal decision ?

I woke up to an email yesterday morning to check the admission portal and was accepted. Here is my appeal letter:

Re: Admission Appeal for Michael …

I would first like to thank the UCLA Undergraduate Admissions Department for taking the time to review my appeal and for re-considering my application for the Fall Quarter 2019.

After a lengthy phone conversation with an Admission’s agent, it was brought to my attention that perhaps I should have been more assertive in communicating the fact that I was granted academic renewal by Rio Hondo Community College. The academic renewal was granted after the Fall Semester 2018; thus, my original application stated that I received three “F” grades at Rio Hondo which would have counted towards my combined college GPA. Unfortunately, I was not able to amend the recorded marks on the Transfer Application Update; however, I did make a note of the academic renewal in the additional comments section.

When taking into account the academic renewal, my combined college GPA is 3.79, and my UC GPA is 3.84. These grade point averages historically have been highly competitive for Philosophy major transfer applicants at UCLA. It is also worth noting that I have completed all the required Philosophy major transfer prerequisites with a 4.0 GPA and will have completed all IGETC courses by the end of the Spring Semester 2019.

The three Rio Hondo courses that have been officially updated to “AR” are as follows:
ART 172 - Desktop Publishing - Spring 2006
MATH 130 - Statistics - Fall 2010
CD 106 - Child Growth and Development - Spring 2011

Since overcoming drug addiction, homelessness and returning to school at Santa Monica College in Fall 2017, I have completed 34 units (all UC transferable courses) with a 3.88 GPA. I accomplished this while being employed full-time and fully self-supporting. I feel this speaks volumes to the level of commitment I have made towards my education and the person I am today. Taking this into consideration along with my dedication to community service and helping others, I am confident that I would be a valuable addition to the UCLA student body.

With gratitude,
Michael …
