UCLA/UCB Biology related majors - where are you?!

I've noticed that I almost never come across Biology majors on the UC Transfer forums. Everyones doing business or econ or sociology!

I'm just starting CC and its my only goal right now to get a 4.0. I'm doing MCDB for UCLA (dream school) and my questions to you guys are:

How are you approaching the next two years?

Are you taking IGETC courses first? Major requirements first?

Are you doing Bio/Chem the first year and Physics the 2nd?

Are you planning to get any Biology related internships?

What are you going to do for FUN?! Any social goals?

I just wanted to compare my plans to anyone elses, so that we can share advice. I welcome UC admits, "in progress" students and students who havent started. AND I'll be sad if no one responds =(

So I'll be honest and say that I seriously thought about majoring in bio (premed), but realized that it's not really a desirable path for me to be a doctor because of all the obstacles. I'm probably ignorant, but I couldn't think of anything else that a bio degree would do for me other than teach or work in a lab.

Probably not the response you were hoping for, but I thought I'd pitch in somehow ;).

haha Thanks anyways! Yeah biology majors can be tough - especially with the weeder classes like o chem. I'm slightly worried, however I'm prepared to give it everything ive got!

Anyone else? =P

I've noticed the same thing I'm biology major applying for 09. One thing though is that it usually takes about 3 years for biology majors at CC. I was advised not to do IGETC because biology has so many pre-reqs as it is around 60 just for the major :x but if you can it will help I know UCLA really looks at your pre-reqs so focus on those (I know someone who got rejected by UCLA with IGETC and 4.0 but didnt do all pre-reqs). I'm finishing up physics last I think thats what most people do because schools require gen chem and gen bio to be completed and only recommend physics be done. I'm a dental intern at 2 offices(get to see alot of fillings). I'm actually applying as your major though MCDB gotta love cells! lol. I'm in O-chem right now it's not that bad I actually kinda enjoy it just study hard and you'll do fine! If you dont then yes it becomes a weeder class lol. Alright well gl in your classes! some can be a lot of work for bio majors.

Hey thanks for the response. Yeah I heard that these majors take around 3 years, but for people starting with intro classes. According to my schedule, I should be done exactly in 2 years, with VERY small room for error. and thats because I'm starting with Math 1C (calc) and im doing 3 major courses this quarter. Then for the rest of the 2 years, I'm doing two major courses a quarter.

Goodluck Macattack!

I'll give you a piece of advice. If you're a premed, take general chemistry at your first semester. Otherwise, you will be behind on the chemistry sequence, and as a result, you may delay your graduation by a year. Take gen chem 1 + 2 so that you can take organic chem 1 + 2 shortly after. Upper division classes often require either the first organic chem class or both organic chem classes as prerequisites, so you will be behind if you start late.
