There's the UCLA guesthouse, but for what they charge you can find a hotel (or maybe for less). Can't really suggest any off the top of my head right now though.

And I really suggest the car. Getting to USC without one will either be miserable (bus) or expensive (cab). Might as well rent a car and make the most out of your trip to LA.

better make detailed plans, because UCLA is located in the middle of nowhere

Lollerskates.

Citan,

I'm an idiot. I don't get obvious sarcasm. Durr.

(Edited post.)

UCLAri: that was a joke....

We toured both UCLA and USC this summer during a California college tour. We stayed at the Luxe which is on Sunset just west of the 405. When I mentioned to the person at the hotel that we were touring UCLA, she said she would give us the UCLA discount (which I think was $25 off the regular price). You will have to pay a parking charge at the hotel which is about $25, however! The decor of the hotel is very modern which was a nice change from the standard hotels we had been staying in. Be aware that the beds are doubles (not queens), but the roll-away bed was a full twin (not the fold-up kind of roll-away).

You really should get a car to see both schools. From the Luxe, it will take you 5-10 minutes to drive to UCLA.(You will need to pay for parking there as well.) Be sure to do both the campus tour and the residence hall tours at UCLA. Very tiring to do in one day, but our tour guides were great, and they gave us a great feel for UCLA.

The next day, it took us about 40 minutes (moderate traffic) to get to USC for the Meet USC tour at 8:45. I would suggest the "Meet USC" tour over the regular USC tour. Even though I am a UCLA Bruin, I must say that the Meet USC tour was impressive...after you recover from the tuition sticker shock!(Parking was free with the Meet USC Tour.)

The list on that page might be helpful.

I know that the Hotel Angeleno offers a shuttle service to UCLA. Doesn't help with the USC tour, though.

All excellent suggestions...

Yes, I saw the campus 'hotel' on the UCLA website - didn't look very appealing. We were thinking of the Westwood area so that we could explore a bit - hopefully on foot. Found a hotel called Hilgard House on TripAdvisor - anyone know anything about it? Perhaps renting a car at the airport might be best, stay near UCLA, and use the car for USC & return to airport. I am guessing that will save time if nothing else.

Thanks for the USC tour suggestion, 84Bruin. Any tips on touring UCLA? [oops, I see you did some suggesting - was that a 'formal' tour?] We will be meeting with the music dept advisor @UCLA and a prof @USC.

Bring
good
shoes.

:(

If you're a sports fan, please check out this place. It's wicked cool.

em you werent in the sports room long enough... that myust be the easiest work study job there, just sit in a desk

Yes but I plan on returning. Namaste, cut me some slack. I was half alive during the tour... and apparently, that has something to do with being in the trophy room. Would you not agree that looking at the 100 titles is worth a gander? HMM?! She wanted suggestions so I tossed a good one; what else might have I suggested? A stroll around that tarnished locker with acid stickers?

MC:

For UCLA you can register online for a housing tour (with a guide, we saw an old dorm, new dorm, dining hall, rec room) or a walking tour of the campus led by a student. We had a great tour guide for the walking tour who was very informed about the school and student life.

It's excellent that you arranged to meet with an advisor at UCLA. (I wish we had managed that at UCLA. We did meet with an undergraduate advisor at UCSB, and it really helps you get a better feel for the school and the program.)

I agree with Emmeline to bring comfortable shoes. I also recommend bringing water. Be sure to eat before you go...I know this sounds obvious, but I found out how cranky family members can get when they are hot, tired, and hungry!

Have fun! UCLA is a beautiful campus!

Was that one of the UCLA urban legends that turned out not to be true? So it was just someones locker.. hmmph. "old wwoman"

namaste: Edit your post or delete it. You're ruining the tradition!

Too late. Orientations are almost over anyway!

We've stayed at both the Hilgard House and the Royal Palace, both within walking distance to UCLA, with free parking at each. Either of them is acceptable, but not a luxury hotel as you might find downtown. But the price with the UCLA discount is around 115. a night, a lot less than downtown. The rooms are clean, but not fancy. The hotel "W" is across the street from the Hilgard House, and it can be noisy until late at night, with the parties going on. (almost $400. a night!)

We found the Royal Palace to be quieter in general. The neighborhood is great for walking to restaurants, movies, museum. From there to USC was about a half hour drive, but traffic can make it longer.

Excellent suggestions 84Bruin & Kira_Mom...

We wanted to be able to explore both the UCLA campus (dorms & music dept) & Westwood (restaurants) without bothering with a car. Certainly, we will need one for the trip to USC.

My daughter is a transfer student with some specific goals, so meeting with an advisor is advised! She will have to endure an audition process as well - but that means we get to come back in the spring.

Shoes, water, food, anything else?

Thanks again! --MC
