Hey guys, I’m a current senior in high school and am admitted to both UCLA & BC! I could not be more grateful. I am having a really, really hard time deciding where I should go. I did not get any financial aid from either school; however I am a California resident. Although I love the SoCal weather, I do not mind experiencing snow or seasons for a change. The largest issues at hand are class sizes, tuition/cost, internship opportunities & success after college. I was admitted into the colleges of letters of arts & sciences for both UCLA & BC, thinking that I wanted to do pre-med. However, after much thought, I also think going into business would be fun. I like the idea of marketing/management in areas of fashion/products or entertainment. I know that is super broad, but I love the general area of study. However, at UCLA there is no undergraduate business school and they only offer biz/econ as a pre-major. At BC, since I am enrolled under the Letters of Arts and Science school, I can only take the majors there. At BC, I was thinking of majoring in Economics & applying to have a minor in the Caroll School of Management as a sophomore. I just need new perspective & some insight on how competitive UCLA/BC is and what would be better for me in the long run. I am not sure if BC is worth almost double the cost of UCLA, but maybe it is! Any advice/info would be GREATLY appreciated.

My SoCal D had similar choices a few years ago, and chose BC. Could not have chosen better. But whether the cost is worth it is a decision for your family.

Couple of academic considerations:

Both are strong in premed, but UCLA will be more “competitive” – lotsa gunners in the STEM classes. Boston has a gazillion opportunities for research and ECs. Plenty of biotech/pharma firms in the area.

BC has a Core curriculum, so reading’ and writ in’ is expected. But that will help with the MCAT VR. Econ is strong, as is CSOM. Highly unlikely to transfer into CSOM – just no space, if that is a consideration.

UCLA’s biz econ program is excellent, and well regarded by employers. (Most top schools don’t even offer undergrad biz – just Penn Wharton and MIT, for example, but even then, the Wharton degree is technically a BS in Econ.)

fwiw: IMO, a liberal arts degree in Econ beats undergrad-biz. Then go get an MBA later.

Go to UCLA.

You’re in state, so cost favors UCLA.
Weather in Boston sucks… compared to Cali.
If you’re not in CSOM, bizecon from UCLA is better than Econ in BC A&S (it’s basically impossible to transfer into CSOM, unfortunately… as in there are like 0-3 spots per year)

For 1/2 the money go to UCLA. Especially if grad school is a consideration. For business an Econ degree from UCLA is better than a liberal arts Econ degree from BC. I do not know how easy it would be to transfer to CSOM once at BC but I doubt it would be easy and I certainly would not count on it.

UCLA says me
