UCLA vs Purdue vs UIUC(D.G.S) vs Michigan

Hi! I am an International student and aim to pursue my undergraduate engineering in computer science.I have got admitted to UCLA,Purdue and Michigan with computer science but in UIUC i was offered D.G.S.Which one should I go for? Please arrange these universities in descending order. I do not have a problem with the cost but job prospects are a priority.I would also like to enjoy my time at college so the university whose computer science course is least demanding would suit me better but this is secondary.

Anyone there!

To be honest, the job prospects for graduates of all 4 of those very good universities are practically identical.

If i were you, I would pick based on other factor. I honestly would choose between Michigan and UCLA.

Hi James!

Thank you so much for your reply!Since you said that i should consider other factors that is why I mentioned about the rigor of the courses at these universities since that is the only other factor I find important in my choice of University.

The computer science courses will be demanding at all the schools on your list. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t have fun. Have you visited the schools? That might help you to decide where you want to go.

Good luck!

There is really no way to answer your question about rigor, without attending all 4 schools.

UCLA has the best location. I’m going there in September!

I was also considering going to UCLA but a number of people have told me that UCLA does not have an engineering department as strong as one of Purdue or Michigan.

Any more suggestions guys!

OK!got to tell you guys.UIUC just admitted me to my first choice major i.e Computer Engineering.

Purdue, Michigan, and UIUC are better for engineering than UCLA, imo. They all have very very good job placement, so I would visit and pick the university that you like best. If you go to Purdue, I’ll see you there in the fall! :D

I was not considering UIUC since I had got an admit in D.G.S but now I have Computer Engineering as my major and C.E at UIUC is considered better than any of the other options I have.As far as a visit is concerned,I would not be able to visit the Universities since I am an International student and have certain other commitments here so I guess I’ll have to go by the word of mouth.

Don’t be so quick to rule out UCLA. Sure, Michigan and UIUC are slightly higher in US News rankings, but check out some of the others.

QS World Rankings (Engineering). UCLA is ranked #15 in the world and 8th in EE.
[QS World University Rankings - Topuniversities](http://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings/world-university-rankings/2010/subject-rankings/technology)

And besides, with name recognition, UCLA is far and away the strongest school on your list. And in overall (non-engineering) rank, it is way ahead of Purdue and UIUC, and probably on par with Michigan.

I am aware of the rankings which you have highlighted and by the way each ranking shows a different trend.I can very well discuss the U.S news rankings which you have already mentioned shows UCLA at 14 in Undergraduate Engineering and U.I.U.C at 6 whereas the Q.S rankings show U.I.U.C slightly lower than U.C.L.A so there is really no point discussing rankings. That’s why I said that C.E at U.I.U.C is ‘considered’ better and not ‘ranked’ better. Therefore,I would like to talk about the actual ‘brand name’ of the University rather than the rankings.

That makes sense.
So in effect, there is not a significant discrepancy in the quality of their engineering departments. In fact, engineering firms are very well familiar with both of those schools.

As far as “brand name” of university, UCLA is both more well-known (outside of engineering), but also much more competitive admissions (22% vs like 60%). Plus, you’re in southern-california paradise, not a lame cornfield. Not to mention the proximity to Silicon Valley.

Go to UCLA!!
There is a reason it is the school with the largest amount of applicants, in the whole country (60,000).

Prestige (UCLA) or better C.E program(UIUC).It’s too confusing.Different suggestions from different people isn’t helping either.God help me!

Michigan is every bit as prestigious as UCLA and is better in engineering.

“Go to UCLA!!
There is a reason it is the school with the largest amount of applicants, in the whole country (60,000).”

That is true. It’s just a simple check mark on a UC application that any resident of California can apply to. California has over 35,000,000 residents!

What about UIUC ?No doubt that Michigan and UCLA are more selective but when it comes to Computer Engineering UIUC is as selective or even more and it’s C.E program is considered one of the best.

Perhaps. The issue is, that the location is terrible. And 4 years is quite a long time to spend in a cornfield. Have you seen the movie, “signs”, by Mel Gibson?

Having a program that is “considered one of the best” just means the professors research is getting a lot of citations, and other esoteric factors that won’t remotely affect you as an undergraduate. However, the prestige difference is real!!

Ha Ha Ha! I am pretty hopeful that I wont find aliens at UIUC.
By the way, a relative of mine residing in San Francisco told me-
" The California system is under a lot of pressure with budget cuts and so there will be challenges at UCLA even though it is very good."
and
“California used to be a great feeder to Silicon Valley but the California economy is in trouble with the budget cuts.” so would the budget cut really affect me adversely if I join UCLA.
