UCLA VS UC Berkeley, Pre-Med, Lifestyle

I am planning a Pre-Med path (quite certain) but am not dead set; in other words, I’m still “testing the waters” and am willing to switch majors if I feel that I should. Would a Finance/Business major be superior at one university (just in case I switch)?

I was accepted into UCLA and UC Berkeley this year. I was wondering if you could give me some Pros and Cons for each school? Is it true grade deflation is as bad as people say it is? Is it easier to maintain a higher GPA (given the same effort) at one of the schools? Do Medical Schools consider Berkeley to be more prestigious than UCLA or is it about the same (for example would a 3.5 @ Berkeley = a 3.7 or 3.6 @ UCLA)? I’m interested in a a molecular biology or bio related major at both. I’m currently in the College of Chemistry @ Berkeley but imma switch and i talked to the advisors/counselors and it seems to be an easy switch.

I know that UCLA probably has better opportunities for hospital volunteering and probably clinical research than Berkeley right? However Berkeley probably has better opportunities for basic research. So my question sis which school has better opportunities for “pre-med” related activities (between research, volunteer, internship, etc.?)? I hope this makes sense.

Is Greek Life better at one school? What is it like at both?

Lastly, Do you have any advice to maintaining good grades with a balanced lifestyle.

Thanks in advance.

<<<,

<<<,

no, just no

med schools dont care if the applicant comes from UCB, UCLA, UCI, UCD, LMU, SCU, SLO or wherever.

there is no GPA adjustment…there is no prestige. Med schools care about GPA, MCAT scores, and medically related ECs

if you want to go to med school, dont get a 3.5 anywhere

At 18+, the average Cal student is a woman, not a “girl,” and deserves to be valued for her intellect and her contributions to her community, not her physical appearance.

You’re going to college to get an education. Focus on which college best meets your academic goals.

That last section shouldn’t even be dignified with a response.

The way that Wenning stated that last response could have been… rephrased better, but honestly, some guys give how the “average girl looks” at least a LITTLE consideration when thinking about a school (not every guy of course but some guys have these concerns), but how the “average girl looks” shouldn’t be the the ultimate decider when choosing a college because students can meet partners anywhere around the college area or outside the college (at various workplaces, libraries outside the school, other public areas). Academics, finances, social/mental fit, and overall opportunities should be considered most important when making a decision about which college to attend.

The women attending UCLA and Berkeley are intelligent and accomplished human beings. Asking a bunch of strangers online to average them all together on a scale from 1-10 based on looks is demeaning… Hopefully you’re smart enough not to say any of this out loud. I hate that it’s 2016 and people still act like women are objects that they can “rate.”

YASSSSS I AM LAHVINGGG THIS THREAD. JUST YES.

sorry, please ignore that last question/statement , that was rude of me, i was just prompted by a friend that was an important consideration…

from my talking with other people and alumuni it seems you should just flip a coin and pick one. impossible choice for pre-med it seems.

If weather is important, pick UCLA
If edginess is important, pick Cal
If “hot” women are important, don’t pick either. They are smart. They have standards. They won’t put up with s**t. They will devour you, and not in a nice way.

in reply to this.

for the same effort is it easier to achieve a higher GPA @ UCLA than Berkeley? if Berkeley simply slaughters your GPA it doesn’t seem worth it to go as that would be a dealbreaker for med. school. I would say i’m fairly hardworker, but when I find something/a subject I love I feel I have no limits when it comes to dedication. I hope medicine is that. So far I’m fascinated by it but also intrigued by finance/business.

Secondly, from my conversing with others and talking with alumni it seems like UCLA has an advantage with having a medical school and hospital on campus hence more pre-med related opportunities. However, Berkeley is the #1 public university and arguably one of the best research institutions in the nation… hence more opportunities for research. No hospital or med school @ UC Berkeley and I think there is only one hospital in the city of Berkeley ( I could be wrong), but the point is that the pre-med opportunities (except for research) seem scarce @ UC Berkeley than UCLA. talk to Berkeley rep and she told me that you may have to go to UCSF, Stanford, hell even UC Davis for pre-med related opportunities (i.e. hospital work). That kinda blows…

Of course maybe I have the above completely wrong? Does anyone who has recently graduated or even currently attend the school have any input?

So my question is which school offers better pre-med opportunities after factoring the prestige/quality of research at Berkeley and the Medical opportunities at UCLA (assuming you try your best to seek out opportunities at both places)?

Thanks in advance for your time.

that seems like an oversimplified answer, but i’ll keep that in mind…

look i made a mistake this was my first post on this website

You will find out that you were dead wrong thinking to come to UCLA expecting to get easy A’s in the Premed courses! That is all I can tell you for now!

That is not at all what I was saying. I’m saying is it easier than Berkeley to get good grades (given you try your best at both schools)? I’m not expecting easy A’s in the slightest.

Don’t mean to bump this thread, but I follow the Berkeley admissions Twitter page and I can tell you that there are a lot of pretty girls who are going to Berkeley. Maybe 10 years ago this “Berkeley goggles” was a thing but I don’t see it anymore

What a charming person you are, @pleaseacceptme99

@bodangles don’t have to be charming sweetie, I’m a man

???
Since when shouldn’t men be charming? Don’t they (you) want to be appealing?

@pleaseacceptme99 Men don’t call people “cows,” nor equate not shaving with feminism, nor indeed denigrate women by disparaging the movement many of them belong to. That kind of idiocy is strictly reserved for little boys.

@bodangles fine I’m a boy better than being a fat hippie cow
