hey, i am really torn between UCLA (my dream school) and UC Irvine.
I was accepted as a Regents Scholar to UCI in the honors program, but not to UCLA. I am going to UCLA day tomorrow, and already visited Irvine.... which i fell in love with, but from a pure academic stand point any advice?

Last year I had the same options as you… UCLA and UC Irvine Campuswide Honors and Regents… I chose UCLA… but sometimes I wonder if it was the best choice. Regents and Honors status gives you priority when enrolling for classes (sometimes it’s hard to get the classes you want here if you don’t come with a lot of AP/CC credits). Depends on the major too…

Honors–4 years guranteed housing, priority enrollment ALL 4 years, housing w/ other people in Honors program, and other smaller bonuses.

Do you plan to do anything after undergrad? If so, you should consider the honors program. Top 10% at UCI or being avg. at UCLA its your call.

^umm…i think you are grossly oversimplifying things.

first of all, i agree that regents has it’s perks. if you are low on money or whatever, then that may be a deciding factor. if you like the irvine campus more or just like UCI more in general then that is a deciding factor.

as for doing things after undergrad, you can’t go wrong with either school.

as for how you will do academically at either school, you have no idea and it should not be a deciding factor. you may come to ucla and be a top student. you may go to irvine and be an average student. you dont really know, thus it shouldnt be a factor you take into consideration. Based on the experiences that some of my friends at irvine, it is far from easy (even if you are a “regents” caliber student)

Well, are you sure you are not in UCLA’s honor program? I was told you have to apply for it. The eligibility is to have 4.1 GPA and SAT 1380 (ACT 31).

Regents is just for tuition, and not housing, so Regents is only like a 25% discount if you’re living on campus.

If money isn’t that tight, you should choose a school based on how much you actually like it. Honors students can easily get kicked out of the programs for underperforming.

Priority registration sounds really good, but the overall college experience is even more important.

To me, it sounds like you’ll like UCLA better.

Good luck! :)
