So as the title says, I want to know which school has better neuroscience program. I was researching on the web for quite awhile for some suggestions and advice but couldn't really make up my mind in which school to attend.

I heard UCSD has better programs and is higher ranked than UCLA in neurosci but I also hearch UCLA neurosci isn't bad at all.

well I'm majoring in neuroscience, and I think UCLA would be a better fit for a neuroscience major. I think over UCSD I'll choose UCLA (assuming that I won't get into the ivies I want to go to) because overall, I've heard that the students get more opportunities to work in labs at UCLA with the undergraduate research program and thus get into better grad schools. Both are great schools, so either one could have an environment in which a neuroscience major could thrive.

Thank you everyone for the replies. Im going to take pre-med classes since my goal is to go into a med school. So will UCLA neuroscience classes be tougher with pre-med classes than UCSD's? I also applied to UC Berkeley for Neurobiology major but I'm not sure about the difference between neuroscience and neurobiology. But is Berkeley well-known for their neurobiology programs??

if you wanna do neuro, i would go to ucla. one is because its actually called neuroscience and not neurobiology so it doesnt look very "typical" and two because not a lot of schools actually have a neuroscience major, so LA is special in that regard.

ucla is definitely tough, but way better than berkeley for pre med. do NOT go to berkeley for pre med. that is a TERRIBLE decision. ucsd, im not sure...ucla is better ranked AND a lot more fun + has a better med school (lotta opportunities, connections to make) than sd.

Neuroscience is such a baller major. This is still undergrad, so choose UCLA. UCSD has close to tops in nation for NS, but rather more focused at the graduate level I believe. Remember how you got into UCLA - not just by studying and reading books, but what you did outside the classroom. UCLA will give you a better opportunity to continue to do that than sd.

Why do you say that? What does UCLA offer in this area that UCSD doesn't?

echoing 90star09 and zzzboy, i think la would present more opportunities as well. i'm not bashing ucsd at all, because both are great programs with intellectual diversity that offer a lot to any student. but you can only pick one. i should rephrase my original statement to say that ucla presents the student with a little more, rather than flat-out better, opportunities.

ucsd does not have a neuroscience major. They have "physiology and neuroscience" which forces you to take physio classes. ucla neuroscience has none of that other physio, just nervous system material

thus, if you want to torment yourself with physio (which sucks massively at the undergrad level) then go to ucsd. otherwise, neuroscience at ucla is for you

Dude, how SURE are you that you want to stick with Neuroscience? There's a good chance you'll change your mind after a year or two and you definitely do NOT want to choose colleges based on major alone; just remember to take in other factors...

All three programs you mentioned are very good, it won't matter much either way. UCSD's neuroscience graduate program, however, has been ranked #1 consistently, but that's a long time from now so you have time to decide.

Thank you very much for all the replies. I really appreciate it. :)
So it looks like most of you guys prefer UCLA over UCSD for neuroscience majors.
So adding to this, is UCLA better than UCSD and Berkeley for pre-med students? Also, why is Berkeley bad for premed students? Is it because berkeley doesnt have a med school?

thats one. another is that its very difficult to find research. and another is that good hospitals for volunteering are far away. if you can handle the competition, ucla has great opportunities.

yea sorry i just meant to say that ucla has good opportunities (better than cal imo) but there is still tons of competition, as there would be at cal/sd/etc.
