UCLA

Hi everyone!

I’m currently a sophomore in high school, and my dream school has always been UCLA. My GPA is low 3.6 unweighted, which I know is low.

My school only offers 1 AP (euro) for sophomores, but I didn’t take that. I’m taking 3 APs next year though, and probably 4-5 senior year. I’m taking APUSH, AP Calc AB, and I’m deciding on science (between physics and environmental science). Should I just take environmental science next year to boost my GPA (it’s easy in my school and physics is worlds harder) and AP Physics senior year? Would it look bad to be taking such an easy AP, or is it worth it if it brings my GPA up to a more favorable number. Thanks so much! I’m out of state (i know the tuition).

ECs: built a successful business freshman year (5,000+ sales), french honor society, marching band/wind ensemble, varsity tennis since freshman year, and FBLA.

UCLA like all the UC’s are very GPA focused so bumping up your GPA will help. I would take AP Environmental Science if you have an interest in the subject, not just to increase your GPA. There is no magic number for how many AP’s you take in HS, so around 7-8 by end of Senior year is fine. Schools want to see you challenge yourself. Having a successful business shows initiative and leadership which will make for a great personal insight essay.

You have no test scores at this point so difficult to gauge your chances. Work hard, prep for the ACT/SAT and continue doing what interests you throughout HS. At the end of Junior year, calculate your UC GPA and repost with all your stats.
