Letter a few days ago - super psyched, UConn was one of my top choices !
Honors program and 18,000 in merit
Out of state
4.1 GPA / 1360 SAT
~350 volunteer hours
Pretty good ECAs, leadership things
Some rigorous classes, awards/honors
Econ Major
How prestigious/selective is the Honors program? I got in but I’m wondering if I would be better off taking regular classes at a reach school (my first choice is U-M) if I get in. Thoughts?
Hey all - I actually received my acceptance letter back in December because I applied for the scholarship deadline. I was also admitted into the Honors program and got a ton of scholarship money. Congrats to all that were accepted, and I hope to see some of you at the admitted students day/orientation!
My son was accepted into the Business School, Finance Manager. 1400 SAT, 10 AP’s, leadership, 4 year varsity sports etc. at a highly ranked CT HS. No merit or need based aid. Very disappointed in UCONN. Merit awards with similar stats are going to OOS students. UCONN just went to the bottom of the list.
@NEBlue If you’re in state CT, you can go to UConn for approx 30k all in. Other similar competitive institutions with top tier business schools are 60k plus. Our limited college search experience shows that even with unbelievable stats you’re going to be hard pressed to get anywhere close to 20-30k annual aid from a private college and certainly not from an OOS public university at 45-50k price tag. What other schools moved ahead of UConn for your son? Very interested to know of viable and more affordable options. This is a crazy process!
@NEBlue@Meg601 I understand. We have the same thing in NY. Our state schools give little or no merit for in state students due to the lower in state tuition too. UCONN gives more merit to OOS students because their tuition is a lot higher and the merit awards bring the tuition down closer to in state numbers for them. They like the OOS students at UCONN because even with the merit aid, they are still paying more that in state students which is a financial boost fro UCONN.
@NEBlue, did your son attend school visits, open house, etc? I’m convinced interest plays a big role. When my daughter applied in 2014 she had very high stats but really had no intention of attending and never actually visited before applying, it was more of a safety school. She was accepted into the honors program but was not offered merit. My son on the other hand who was just accepted a few weeks ago, also into the business program was offered merit. (No need based aid) He visited twice (regular visit and open house). His stats were very similar to your sons. Not as many AP’s, but high GPA, 1480 on SAT, and varsity sports, leadership, etc. even w/o the merit offer UCONN would have been our lowest cost school. His merit announcement said it was offered by a contributor that would be revealed when he accepted the offer. We’re waiting to hear from one more school but he’s 99% sure it will be UCONN. This would have been the case whether he received merit or not.
I am an OOS RD applicant and have not received a decision yet. I must log onto the portal 10 times per day to check! Any other OOS applicants still waiting for word from U Conn (Storrs)? March 2017 is the longest month of my life!
@VirginiaDare, yes, he went on a tour of UCONN… admittedly, UCONN was not his first choice so he did not show any additional interest in the school other than an application and a tour.
My daughter was accepted and received a nice leadership merit award, nothing need based. We live in CT. She has similar statistics but is a biology major.
My son has been admitted to the School of Nursing. We really hadn’t even considered UConn, OOS, until this week. Of the 10 schools, this seems to be the best value with the 15K merit and it’s close to home. He first heard from Penn State 12/12 and although they gave 4K/year, he waited for Ohio States package which was sadly 0 because he did not apply Early. Also admitted to Nursing for UMiami, Tampa, Seton Hall, UMass Amherst, Towson, was wait listed but just got in to Northeastern and the best deal was Case Western with a generous 44K award but has no real sports that are a draw. He’s a Varsity Football and Lax player, so UConn seems perfect and we look forward to attending admitted student day and committing.
Our D accepted Uconn (MA res) and will likely go (on WL for UR and Wm Mary) but can’t attend open day tomorrow as she is in New Orleans on a trip with the HS jazz band! She also got an invite to a summer program in July for a few days - did anyone else get that? She is considering premed track a s apparently UConn has great science Dept
