Uconn v Penn state

Ive already got into uconn for biomedical engineering and penn state for bioengineering, yet I already paid the acceptance fee for uconn before I found out about Penn state. I am in state for uconn, but I was considering Penn state as well. Idk why I accepted already, probably excitement from first acceptance, but is there a true difference between engineering at psu and uconn? I know psu is ranked 13 and uconn is 68, but is there a major difference?
Thanks for any responses.

You have UConn in state and thus in-state tuition. My view is that it is seldom a better choice to go to another state’s public university and pay OOS tuition. With engineering, the courses and material that will be taught are usually quite similar among the colleges and any difference is not really worth the usually extreme difference in tuition. Moreover, Penn State is currently under a huge cloud because of the Jerry Sandusky matter. One may feel that relates only to the football program but right now it is affecting the reputation of the entire university and as an OOS rather than in-state I would not be overly anxious to get into PSU at this time.

You’ve asked a question that is impossible for any of us to answer.

U Conn is a great school, but Penn State has a better reputation. If you’re in-state, the tuition difference is considerable.

As far as the courses, etc. both are ABET accredited programs, so the curriculum should be somewhat similar.

The difference is likely to come down to how employers view these programs, and how it will impact on your first post-graduation job (or to a lesser extent on graduate school applications).

FWIW – my D was faced with a similar (though not identical choice last year) between UConn (in-state) and other schools with a better reputation. Ultimately, based on family circumstances, my D chose an out of state school.
