I was accepted into UConn, Penn State, and Texas A&M for Mechanical Engineering this fall. The three schools have very different costs; Penn State would be $52k a year, Texas $40k, and UConn about $26k. My parents have a relatively high income and could take out loans in order to pay for any of these schools, and I understand that the three schools have different reputations when it comes to engineering, but is the price difference worth it?
I probably would not take out loans for a school if you can go to one that is accredited with no loans. UConn is the most affordable option for sure. I’d knock out Penn State for the price alone. A&M is a great engineering schools but it is way more than UConn and if you are from CT would you enjoy the culture (ex. large corp of cadets, agricultural component to school)?
No, engineering degrees from Texas or Penn State are NOT worth so much more than from UConn.
