I have a friend who worked at UCR with me back then when we were students. He stayed after graduation and is still there today. DO NOT test them. They hold DMCA rules very seriously. If you are caught illegally downloading (abusing) over the schools network, you may get cutoff, there are people randomly monitoring what goes on, they do not invade your privacy. But use it safely.

Memory lane…I was actually one of the people who initially assisted in some installation of antennas and tested out Wifi when it first became available (802.11b days, 2002 I think, idk I’m getting too old), back then there were only a few buildings that had reception, big lecture rooms would only have reception in the center, nothing along the edges. Laptops did not have wifi built in, students would have to purchase their own PCMCIA Wifi cards OR the Student Computing Department had a program where you can borrow one of the limited amount of PCMCIA cards for one quarter. There was a raffle to win a card each quarter. For some who were not lucky enough to have these magical Wifi cards, you can always plug in the LAN…at the always crowded libraries

…(voice of old man) YOU DAMN KIDS HAVE NO IDEA HOW GOOD YOU HAVE IT!

actually the entire city of riverside has wifi, but not the same speed as the godly UCR internet.

ALL HAIL MOBILENET

Thank you for your advice, espcially sapipa177. if I use utorrent to download some files, and someone catch me, is it impossible to use UCR wifi ? :<

Haven’t heard of people getting caught. Not saying it doesn’t happen, but I’d be careful of what you choose to download. Though I think porn’s fine because when you’re a man, you’re a man.

Read into details here: [Digital Millenium Copyright Act: Copyright Notification Procedures](http://dmca.ucr.edu/notification.html)

As mentioned, they don’t have the time or power to monitor everyone all the time. Either don’t do it or be careful and always know what could/may happen. The school isn’t out to get you personally, but the RIAA, MPAA, etc. will go after UCR because it is their network that’s involved.

As for porn, just go to the YouTube equivalent…not gonna advertise it, but many of you already know what I’m taking about…you pervs! hahaha

GO READ THIS AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU ARE “CAUGHT”. looks like they are not as harsh as they used to be since your internet access would eventually get restored, still an annoying process.

sapipa177 pretty much told you about internet

They charge more for meals however. The prices are the same for both restaurants but now its

Breakfast: $5.75
Lunch: $9.75
Dinner: $12.75 (I wish I was lying)

To eat on campus:

Sushi and the overpriced Mexican food is still there.
Pasta
Panda Express
Coffee Bean
The Barn
Bytes (pretty much a school owned Coffee Bean in Borns)
the school convenience store
Taco Fresco (more mexican food but better than the one at the HUB)

Off Campus:
Yogurtland
Denny’s
McDonalds
Carl’s Jr
Del Taco
Fatburger
Starbucks
Life Cafe
University Cafe
Pho Saigon
Wienerschnitzel
Shakey’s
Berryland
Jamba Juice
etc…

There are some really great places to eat in Canyon Crest Town Center.

East Coast Bagel (BEST BAGLES EVER-- Bacon Avocado Cheese bagel is my fav)
Jammin Bread (Best sandwiches and soup-- everything is home made)
Crest Cafe (a little pricey, but great breakfast)
Tortilla Grille (they have Taco Tuesdays and Margarita Wednesdays which are awesome!)
Donut Tyme
Monarch Asian Bistro (pricey, but have cheap lunch specials)
Miyako Sushi (soo delicious and decent sushi prices)
Starbucks
Cold Stone
Smokey Canyon BBQ (delicious food, some things pricey, but they have specials)
KFC
Carl’s Jr.
Subs and Spuds (popular sandwich place)

Just thought I would add this here. This is a Facebook post my friend posted. he’s one of the people in charge of searching and destroying people who illegally download things off the school’s network.

“Oh nice. It looks like the kids are trying to be more clever when pirating music/games/movies. The person I’m tracking is trying to MAC address spoof…There’s an app for that!”

Created a facebook page for UCR fall 2011 students

Is UCR’s campus life better than UCSC’s?

it depends on the person. If you like to be in the forest and near the beach, go to UCSC. If not, go to UCR. UCR might seem boring, but there’s always a lot of events going on at UCR.

Not to mention LA and the OC are pretty close to Riverside. If you’re willing to drive an extra 30 more mins, SD is close too.

I love the beach and the forest but I do not love the forest 100% of the time…SO maybe it is a good idea to go to UCR.
