UCR vs. UCSC!

So I got accepted into Riverside and Santa Cruz and I'm waitlisted for Davis but I don't have much hope for Davis so I'm debating between Riverside and Santa Cruz!
I was hoping to either major in Neuroscience or Psychology and I was wondering which college had a better department for either of these!
Also, can you compare the food and environment? I've heard Santa Cruz is really beautiful while Riverside is just eh. Is the housing about the same or is one college much better than the other?

My friends are going to Riverside so I'm not sure what to do! I know Santa Cruz would provide me with a better education but I don't want to be alone there ><
Please help me! D:

Well I can’t help you regarding your major choices but…

The food in the dining halls is mediocre. And you will get really sick of it as the weeks pass. BUT there’s a lot of other places on campus and close by off campus where you can get food, and those places are a lot better.

The area in Riverside kind of sucks, I have to admit. It’s hot all the time and not exactly safe once you go off campus. But if you have a car, you’re just an hour away from a lot of cool places like LA, the beach, the mountains for snowboarding, etc.

For housing, we have traditional style college dorms in Lothian and AI and suite style dorms in Pentland. Lothian and AI have their own dining halls, but each Pentland building has a kitchen. Pentland is the newest dorms followed by Lothian and AI is the oldest. I can’t really say if one is better than the other because it really depends on who you live with and what you make of your experience.

And also you shouldn’t worry about being alone! There’s plenty of opportunities for you to make friends no matter where you go whether it’s in the dorms or in your classes. And you can always skype or talk to your old friends in some way. If you can, I suggest visiting both campuses because that’s the best way for you to know if it fits you or not.

Hopefully this was helpful to you, good luck!

i personally like riverside’s look better than santa cruz. santa cruz is a forest. riverside is a park like setting. this is a personal preference. you should definetly take the time to visit both and form your own opinion! =]

as for food, my parents tried both (my brother goes to ucsc) and they said both suck, but riverside’s sucks a little less. =P

as for housing, ucsc has more options (im pretty sure…), but riverside still has the two main different types of housing for undergrads (traditional and suite style res halls), and that’s all you can really ask for. and there are nice and new res halls of both types at UCR, and im not so sure the same can be said for ucsc. my brother lived in kresge because he wanted apartment style, and it was old…but nice enough i guess haha.

oh that’s another thing, ucsc has apartment style housing for first years, and ucr doesnt. that just means you can get a 4 bedroom 1 bath with a kitchen at ucsc, whereas as ucr you can get a 4 bedroom 1 bath but the kitchen is shared for the whole building.
