I applied for UCLA, but honestly I know I dont have a slight chance of getting in I'm basically relying and hoping on my essays for acceptance. But I read that when your credentials are too low for one of the big UC's like Los Angeles or Berekley, they send your application to one of the lower colleges like Merced. At this point I really just want to get into one of the UC's, what has to happen for them to consider sending your application to another one of their colleges. I realize this might be a broad, not specific question question, but its the only way I can word it :/

If you are an in-state student and meet the UC admission standard which you can find on their website, you are guaranteed a spot “within the UC System”. The school that will guarantee a spot for you is usually UC Merced.

No Im out of state :/

OOS do not have any guarantees. To have a chance to be admitted to one of the lower ranked UCs, you must specifically apply to it. That is easy to do since the UCs have a single application that applies to all UCs so you just have to check off the ones to wich you want the app to go. Moreover, they even make it easy to submit test scores because you need send official scores to only one UC and all automatically get it from the one.
