UCSB Chancellor's Reception 2014

Does anyone know if these invites come out in waves? It looks like all posters were invited to the San Jose reception, which is the weekend before the So CA dates. Wondering if invites for Irvine and LA will go out at the end of this week.

@caligirl14 I was wondering the same thing. That’s why I posted the dates and locations.

as to those thinking their stats aren’t high enough, in old threads there were some lower academic stats mixed in and the consensus (such as there was one) was that it reflected the UCSB admissions process which goes for the well rounded, involved student, giving academics half the weight and other factors half the weight.

If you don’t attend will it affect your chances of admission? Or will you just have to wait until the regular decision date to be accepted normally?

At the reception when they tell everyone that they are admitted, I think they mean everyone who was invited (whether attending or not) has already been admitted.

S14 just received his invitation today. We live closest to San Jose Reception. S11 recieved this same invitation 3 years ago. We attended and it was a very nice event. They announce acceptance and treat new admits very nicely. We were dismayed when S11 was ultimately admitted under alternate major. I do hope this no longer happens. Congratulations to all the invitees.

I got an e-mail for one in Seattle. I won’t be able to attend since I live in Oregon. I’m super confused… So this means we’re in for sure, or not? My stats in a nutshell if you guys wanted to know are: 3.7 uw GPA, 2030 SAT, 2 APs and all honors math classes + lots of theatre/choir extracurriculars.

So does this mean they are still sending it out? Also, if I didn’t receive this was I rejected??

^^ Only a small group of students get the invite, so if you didn’t get it you are not rejected. If they invited all admitted students, they would have to rent a football stadium.

Hi,
I got an email invitation to the SJ reception yesterday. I’m posting my stats but I haven’t done this in a while so please bear with me

SAT 1970. W 730 Cr 680 M 560
SAT2 Spanish 790 French 720
GPA I really don’t know because my school uses a very different system that goes up to 4.8. Definitely not impressive though.
I took pretty average courses freshman year and got okay grades (As and Bs, maybe a C in math)
Sophomore year I added an honors course and an AP. Better grades
Winter junior year I was diagnosed with adjustment disorder but by then I had already messed up all of grades and lost leadership positions. Very bad year. Only one A on my report card that year
Senior year straight As first semester, 4.1 GPA. Not sure if they see 7th semester grades though

Given those stats, I don’t think I’m a super strong candidate. However, I go to highly prestigious private school where I am the only Hispanic in my grade. Very unique story to sell on my essays.

As for ECs, I could’ve been a lot better. I did a lot tutoring and that type of thing, yearbook sophomore year. I don’t have a single activity I did all 4 years. Member of SNHS and FNHS. AP scholar. Nothing terribly memorable

I hope this helps someone!

I’ve been reading a lot of threads and I’m still confused - does my invite to the SJ reception basically guarantee admission? I don’t want to get my hopes up for nothing. Also read that it’s for honors students? I’d be VERY surprised! But pleased of course

My child got an email invite yesterday- stats are: 2100 SAT, 750 US History SAT2, 690 Literature SAT2, uw GPA 3.98 and weighted 4.3, lots of honors/AP, decent EC’s, especially on the athletic side.

Are these invites all going to applicants located a distance from UCSB? Is there a Chancellor’s reception on the UCSB campus? We live near UCSB and haven’t received an invite. My child has pretty good stats and EC’s.

Good question @tasmom, not sure. We live in northern california and invite we got was for San Jose

Also, it does sound like all the posts so far were related to the San Jose reception. So maybe other reception invites haven’t yet been sent?

My S got a paper invite (don’t think he got an email) that listed all reception sites. His stats are 3.92 UW and 2300 SAT. He doesn’t plan to attend, hope this doesn’t negatively affect him. Congrats to all invitees – seems to be a great sign!

@collegetime18 where are you located?

@caligirl14 we’re in San Francisco

Getting an invitation to a reception does not guarantee admission. I had a daughter last year who received an invitation (out of state) and was not admitted. I think this is their way for speaking with applicants about UCSB as they near decisions. From what I can tell, the locations vary every year. And not all of the receptions are the same. Some are Chancellor’s receptions, others are just receptions. It may depend on which type of reception you go to.

We live in the SJ area - my D received the invite yesterday for the March 9th event in SJ. Stats are 2140 SAT, 4.25 WGPA, 720 in SATII Math and 720 in SATII French

@Wendydarrling ONE out of state dinner last year didn’t say they were admitting everyone and they didn’t, it was in Chicago and people speculated they just invited everyone who applied there, to get enough people, but no one really understood why it was different from all the rest.

@tasmom, from old threads they come out in order of the date of the dinners, and I posted the dates of the dinners I could find on page 2 of this thread. However Wendydarrling said she got an invitation to one in Seattle, and that is not on my list, so there may be others. I’m hoping more invitations will go out. We are in Los Angeles and a dinner is planned down here as well.

From last year’s it seemed it was by major, and the more competitive the major the higher the stats, but that also diversity and EC aspects played in. This is all speculation based on the CC data points, though.

anyone know when the LA dinner is released? or around when?
