My D is half Asian and half White. She got in UCSB,USD,USM,UCSD and UCI so far. It is because she has worked hard in school and she is a 4 yrs varsity track and field athlete, team captain Jr and Sr yr, volunteer at church. 4.63W and 4.20 UW and AP classes and 4 AP class this yr. SAT 2100. So for someone to say people get in because they are Asian is unacceptable. Asians are smarter people period.

I think it’s odd to assume one did not get into ucsb because they are white when a very large percentage of the school is white. Just my $0.02

Some of you are racist.

Asians are smarter people???

Wow Bill Gates and Steve Jobs could have done so much more had they been fortunate enough to be asian and smarter.

As pointed out on the CalPoly thread, there is a boost for this that and the other, but where IS the boost for the number of years have you been a California “tax-paying” resident?? Supporting this system and handing over thousands of dollars a year only to find out that 18 years later, they have no room for your child?? If we have such dire budget problem, then stop giving a completely free ride to any body!! (Seriously, a kid graduating from Cal or UCLA or any other UC can certainly take it upon him or herself to take out a loan or two and pay that back JUST like everyone else who is doing that to attend these schools). Then, just maybe, we won’t have to give away so many seats to OOS and to International students for the dollars. And let’s be honest, I am sure many of them are not paying full freight anyway. I know why they want to come here, but that’s just not enough for me. cdanny is getting blasted for pointing out what has become over the years a travesty to hard working, high achieving California high school students, most of whom have lived here their whole lives dreaming of attending these schools. @Cdanny has every right to feel frustrated and disheartened. I, too, am in the same boat…Daughter with 4.2, 7 AP’s, 2 Honors, 3 jobs over the years (2 run consecutively), sports for 3 years, began a new club at her school, and tutored low performing kids for free, in leadership and ASB, Honor Society and Lifetime CSF member. Kind of well-rounded I’d say. For all this, she got two rejections and two Wait Lists. Our public higher education system is not keeping up with population growth and until it does, we need to educate our kids first!

Look in the mirror mavarama

Wow. I hope this thread isn’t going to turn into one filled with racist and discriminatory statements. I understand everyone’s frustration with rejections and the seemingly arbitrary nature of the acceptances. I believe these are prime for the appeals process. I am wondering how many students that have received rejections from all applied to UC’s will be admitted to another UC under the ELC program. Obviously not as good as being accepted to your chosen UC, but a UC none-the-less.

@lwyrwood… Unfortunately all ELC program students not admitted to one of the UC’s they applied to are all deferred to UC Merced. No offense but not sending my kid to a new school with no real research or reputation. It seems unbelievable that he applied to half of the UC’s and only wait listed to one. Haven’t heard from UCLA yet but really at this point have no hope.

@Seashel… Sorry and I agree. Try appealing maybe she will get in. Make noise in public - news stations, radio, etc. maybe that will help.

@cdanny so much salt.

@thehomiealan… Really - coming from an international student?

Wow, this thread has gotten ugly.

@cdanny – Did your son apply to engineering? If so, the reason for his rejection is simple – a 3.9 UC weighted GPA is not competitive for engineering. He probably would have been accepted to Letters & Science.

SoCalDad2 what started some of this was the 3.2 gpa 27 ACT Student of Asian decent that stated he had no idea how he got accepted one and into the engineering program two.

@SoCalDad2… yeah if it were only that simple. 4 UC’s only one wait list to UC San Diego which is supposed to be more competitive that UCSB. Same program. 4.25 weighted and kids accepted to his same program with much lower gpa. Many problems with the system. Believe me, I’m part of the system and am all too aware of them. Going to have to move out of state to afford tuition in the state he will be going to. No problem though.

@cdanny who’s the international student?

Just be aware of what is going on. It’s getting worse. Those of you paying taxes and not able to take advantage of the public universities here might get mad enough to do something when the in-state population at the schools dwindles down to nothing and we all have to send our kids out of state. Good luck and goodnight!

I’m not seeing many wait listed applicants. I was wait listed with low sat scores, average GPA, decent essays and a lot of ec. just curious to see how many were wait listed and how many plan to attend. I called the office of admissions and they told me they accepted all wait listed applicants one year but none another year. I hope they accept me.

@cdanny: if your S was nominated for Val…it sure seems like he’s a clear ELC UC admit (and NOT Merced)…absolutely file the appeal.

@seashel: Sounds like we need a proposition on the ballot which makes it mandatory to consider length of residences (don’t get me started on the dream act) gives priority to in state students and sets a specific limit on OOS.

Decision: Rejected Stats:
