In anticipation for tomorrow’s decision results I have started a waitlist thread with data from 2018 and 2017. Please feel free to discuss, post stats and any other pertinent information.
UCSB Waitlist Data:
2018
Number of qualified applicants offered a place on waiting list: 7856
Number accepting a place on the waiting list: 4883
Number of wait-listed students admitted: 14
2017
Number of qualified applicants offered a place on waiting list: 6650
Number accepting a place on the waiting list: 4000
Number of wait-listed students admitted: 960
I was waitlisted. In-state, 1420 SAT (700 W 720 M), 4.21 UC GPA. I applied undeclared social sciences. Honestly a little shaken up and surprised but happy to at least be on the waitlist. Does anyone know when they typically get back to waitlisted students? Also @Gumbymom is it correct that in 2018 they only admitted 14 waitlisted students?
My son graduated with Master’s in Technology Mgmt in 2017. My second son got waitlisted. Devastated. Wrote a letter from his heart. Put on shirt and tie. Delivered it in person to admissions. Admitted class of '21. If you can’t travel there … Fedex it. With your picture. And your heart on the page of your appeal. Good luck all. We sweated this nightmare too. Please do not give up! UCSB really does respond to expressed interest!!
PS Daughter just admitted Class of ‘23. Go Gauchos!

Waiting: UCLA, UCB, BU
This is her first choice school. Don’t understand why she wouldn’t be given her second choice major like others especially since accepted into the honors program at UCI. Hope there’s more movement in the waitlist this year.
Usually waitlisted applicants will not hear until after May 1 the SIR date since they need to know how many students actually enroll.
@ThreeforMe: UCSB’s common dataset states that they do not consider an applicant’s level of interest, but maybe going the extra mile impressed admissions enough to admit him. I do not think this will work for every waitlisted applicant…
UCSB is only one of 4 campuses that will allow to file an appeal while on the waitlist. Just make sure you have some COMPELLING NEW information before filing an appeal.
Would it be appropriate to write an appeal letter with your first semester of your senior year transcript (4.5 GPA for me)? Or is that not considered sufficient additional evidence? Tbh I don’t really have much else to offer.
@djbridjmurh: I have linked the appeal process for UCSB and you are required to submit HS transcripts along with LOR’s. If you have an upward grade trend then Senior grades could help your chances but if your grades have been pretty steady throughout your HS career, it probably will make little difference. Also regardless of how your HS weights your courses and your GPA, it will be the individual grades and HS course rigor that all schools will look at.
Rejected for mechanical and electrical engineering.
