Alright so i just transferred to cal state long beach from a CC and finished my first semester there, fall 2010. But for fall 2010 i also applied to San diego state and got denied. THey send me a letter giving me an admission offer for spring 2011 because they received enough funds from the state. The subject i intend to study at SDSU is international business, which is really good and is consistently ranked in the top 15 in the nation. But before i received that admission offer i applied to UCSB and UC davis as an economics major for fall 2011. What university and subject would you guys pursue? Bare in mind that if i intend to enroll at UCSB or UCD i have to decline my admission offer from SDSU for spring 2011 with the risk that i might not get into either UC. Of course, i want to go to UCD or UCSB because of prestige and i am fond of the economics major. On the other hand, SDSU has great location, in the shadows of UC san diego, but for business it is great. And we cannot exclude the bad reputation of being labeled a party school. And as a guy, it doesn't hurt either that SDSU has gorgeous girls (stupid reason to enroll at a college i know). But what do you guys think? would prestige really matter? economics or Int' business? thanks for any advice.

Internet 101, give the reader some spaces and paragraph breaks.

SDSU. It is almost at the level of prestige (speaking of Business degree only) of UCSB and UCD, and certainly more practical than an econ degree. I think the ave. GPA of the Business majors at SDSU is significantly higher than the published school wide 3.45 of entering freshmen.

However, are you sure your units at CSLB will transfer over to SDSU? Did the SDSU recent acceptance letter anticipate that you had not already started at another CSU? I’d call the SDSU admissions office to clarify.

I would go with the bird in the hand. You kinda shot yourself in the foot by not applying to the UC schools at the same time you applied to Long Beach and SDSU. The UC schools give first preference in admission to CC transfers, next to transfers from other UC campuses, and last to all other schools. At this point your a transfer from Long Beach State. So you just dropped from highest to lowest in preference at the UC schools. Given that you were deferred admission at SDSU, my guess would be your app isn’t going to be among the top ones at the UC campuses. But of course I have no way of really knowing that, just my guess.

Since this is an advice forum, let me add it some of mine. Getting hired is based only partly on your degree, although of course your major may be a prerequisite to even be considered for jobs in some areas (engineering, nursing, teaching, accounting, etc). But regardless of whether you need a specific major or just a 4-year degree for a job, at some point you fall into the basket of “qualified” and the next sorting is who to hire out of the basket. This is where what you’ve done in college is critical. The most important thing is to get real-world experience in the career areas you are considering, with things like internships or summer jobs. Next is signs of leadership and ability, such as being an officer (and active) in campus clubs. A SDSU student with internships in a business area is going to be a stronger candidate for a job that one from a supposedly “stronger” UC school who just took classes but has nothing else to show.
