I am an incoming freshman at UCSB and I was wondering if anyone knew how the Gay life is there, as I am a homosexual. Thanks!

Apparently the LGBTQ activism still needs to catch up with the liberal atmosphere at UCSB. UCSB is more liberal than UCLA, but personally I don’t think the gay community is comparable to UCLA or Cal’s. Regardless of that, UCSB is very gay-friendly. And the good thing is that minorities are the most active among all kinds of gay organizations, since the lack of recruitment of minorities is often criticized in some major national LGBTQ organizations. And there’s a gay parade on Pardall every year and a gay wedding day roughly every other year at the Stork Plaza. I’m sure it’s very easy to find gay friends, if you actively seek opportunities to integrate into the gay community at UCSB.

The campus is very LGBQ friendly, I don’t know any transsexuals from SB but I would assume they would be welcomed as well. Our whole building in my senior year got along really well, we had extremely religious people being very good friends with gays on my floor so that was awesome to see. There will be some idiots that might say something mean once in a while, but when that happened to our gay friends we would verbally defend our friends.

I knew two openly gay people who were elected into leadership positions, so I don’t think you have to worry about students secretly being prejudice. Maybe there will be a few here and there, I wouldn’t know unless I was in a gay person’s shoes.

I would say the key is to find the right support system such as friends, campus organizations and even campus administration. Here is a link that might give you some neat info: http://www.sa.ucsb.edu/sgd/CMSMedia/Documents/safebroch04.pdf

I don’t think there are any gay specific venues around UCSB if that was what you were asking.

Well, there’s is a rainbow house in Manzanita.

Pretty good. I went there 4 years and landed a job in Santa Barbara for a while after I got out of school. The guys there are athletic and sun tanned and dress down into plain shorts and t shirts. I hung out at the gym tuesday nights. Also there are gay bars in Santa Barbara. Yoy can always go to LA if needed, but you could score easy in Isla Vista if you hang out
