Hi everyone, I am an incoming freshman who is considering the possibility of greeklife! i anticipate that the classes I am going to have are chem1a,asian american studies, and music 15. I just wanted to know how time consuming it is, what are the pros and cons, and should I do it based on my schedule. And how much are the fees?(the sorority i am hoping to consider is kappa alpha theta)

I’m not certain how well you understand greek life, however, you cannot rush just one chapter. You will rush all chapters, and if you are mutually selected by one, you will receive a bid to that chapter. It may not be Kappa Alpha Theta, it could be one of the other 9 chapters, or you may not receive a bid at all.

Fees will vary from chapter to chapter

What makes UCSB great is that you don’t have to be greek to party. Anyone can walk to IV and have a good time. It’s one of the reasons UCSB is a top party university. So if your reason for joining a sorority is to party, don’t worry about that at SB.

Maybe OP is going greek for philanthropic reasons :p

My bad, i did not clarify myself but yeah, i know the rush is not as simple. Its just that when i mentioned kappa alpha theta, its that i hope to get in there. I just wanted to know based on my classes whether greek life would significantly interfere with my academics and myself financially? i’m not going to jump in completely without taking any precautions. My reasons for joining greek is actually because i do want to get myself involved in philanthropy and leadership. I do want to go to pre-med and am planning to take chemistry, asian american studies, and music 15 and i want to know if greek life could possibly interfere with my academics.

it can interfere, if you let it. it all depends; my roommate is in a sorority, is taking only 3 classes (all easy ones to boot), BUT she goes out pretty much every night, be it a sorority event or just a random party. and lo and behold, she’s not doing too well in school right now. but if you know how to time manage, you’ll be fine.
