Hey guys. Just a little advice would be awesome. I am really lost between these two schools. I love to get out there and enjoy me weekends but I've heard so many negative about UCSDs social life and while UCSB is great people have been saying since I am a middle eastern guy an not the typical white bro guy I won't fit into SB. Anyone have some thoughts?

I’m middle-eastern as well and have been accepted to SB. Still waiting on SD, but i’ll def go with SB. More social life, ranked only 4 spots down below SD and has great academics.

Seriously they are so close in rankings(#39 and #35) that it won’t make a difference by the time you graduate. Better to be in an environment that is actually social than one that is socially dead. Lol. Just my opinion.

UCSD is boring. And I hate the area (La Jolla sucks sry2say). My ex lives right next to the school and I was there four days out of the week. The nights are quiet, the streets are empty, and the students are ugly as hell (more than usual) and they all look DEAD in the eyes.

Those poor souls. We used to make fun of them when they were crossing the street.

Actually, I see them walking all the time on the sidewalk with their giant loser bookbags and we drove by them last weekend and I just started laughing so hard! I mean, just look at them!

Go to ucsd if you want no distractions, go to sb if you want to rage. I’m torn between the two also but I live in San Diego and a lot of my friends go to sdsu so ucsd’s lack of a social scene isn’t a huge deal for me.

i’m torn between these two schools as well!!

if i dont get into UCLA it will be between SB and SD, but which one to pick?
I want to go to SB cause it’s a small town and it’s right there next to the beach, so it’s like a paradise. On the other hand SD is a nice place but it seems like it’s socially dead or something and it’s also closer to home. I’m a psych major if that matters

can anyone offer a clear pic? what would be best

ucsd, ill be going there and im the coolest guy you will ever meet. munaluna sounds like hes 12 years old…and he prefers ucsb…so make your decisions wisely.

@muna: those “giant losers with bookbags” will probably be your boss one day.

hahahahaa jaynami exactly what i thought! but seriously, SORRY that those ucsd kids know what they are there to do. FUX SHIET UP…WITH THEIR GRADES. dont judge them because they’re working hard.

“We used to make fun of them when they were crossing the street.”

Hey, you’re an asshoIe.

UCSB has it all… great academics and fun. It’s not all party 24/7 or all white. I think UCSB has a good mix…almost as good at USC or UCLA.

Lol. Just because UCSB has a better social scene does not automatically mean the students there are any less intelligent than those are UCSD. I’ve always found it funny how people try to correlate SB’s location and party scene with somehow lower academics. It’s tied with Davis. I think people generally have an issue with SB because the students are probably one of the best in terms of balance.

Don’t get me wrong, SD is the third best UC academically, but it’s well known that the entire area is asleep by like 9 pm. Pretty sure I’d be willing to sacrifice the 4 spots in rankings between SD and SB for a more well rounded college experience.

^ nobody said sb students are less intelligent. but branding SD a “ugly loser school” sounds really pathetic. Also, its funny how people make it seem like SD locks you behind bars so you cant go out at night…if your a social person, you should have no problem finding social events at SD, (its like 10 minutes from downtown san diego for **** sakes). You guys make it seem so black and white, “ohh sb is all social, and sd is socially dead”. Its not that one is has a social scene and the other doesnt, its the fact that SB has a REPUTATION of being a party school, while SD doesnt. And if you ask me, if your making your college decision based on which school has more parties then your obviously not ready for college.

I’m wondering the same myself, but throw UCI into the mix. I think it would come down to financial aid for me between the three. SB seems a little isolated, personally, but I’ve never visited the campus. I hope to sometime this summer to get a better perspective. That would be my advice, just check out the campuses, check out the social atmosphere, weigh the financial benefits. They’re pretty much equal in national rankings and science, but they all might give off a different vibe to you.

@ twistnswif, HA! “Cool” people don’t go to UCSD. They all go to SDSU. I used to live RIGHT across the street. That place is probably the lamest place that I’ve ever been and I’ve lived all across the world. Aha, I see. All because I have a different opinion I’m a “child”. Haha, whatever floats yo’ boat.

@ jaynami, I highly doubt that. Librarian directors are usually middle-aged or older since you need to pass several librarian levels and have several years of experience. It takes years of experience just to get passed paraprofessional level. You obviously have no idea how the librarian system works!

@ Hayward1991, thanks I know ;)

@ twistnswif, THERE ARE NO SOCIAL EVENTS IN SAN DIEGO. This place is BORING. There’s only Gaslamp for overpriced **** and PB if you wanna be around a bunch of midwestern pseudo bros. Have your pick.

guys, i have a question.

today i got accepted to ucsb and rejected by ucd. im an out of state cc’er and the ucd rejection mentioned this as a factor. in any case, is it highly or somewhat unlikely to get accepted to ucsd based on these facts alone? any ideas???

thanks and good luck to everybody

@munaluna dude you sound so pathetic. Your talking about “cool” people and calling random strangers ugly losers and laughing at them? Are you forealz??? Grown adults acting like middle school children, this is just plain embarrassing. And we often wonder whats wrong with society. Well…we all point at people like you.

@ twistnswif, cry moar.

Oh please. “Grown adults” act worst than middle school children. You’re going to die out there in the real world where people don’t give a **** about you. They’re gonna drag you down to hell with them and I’ll be standing there laughing.

Oh, how the naive never learn! The world is filled with cruel and mean people, get over it and stop *****ing about it.

^Hell yeah this world is filled with cruel and mean people, and thats the problem, your the problem. While you kiss up to everything that is wrong, I rather live my life doing something productive and positive, even if I die trying. Go live your pointless meaningless selfish life you scum. Im done here. ;)

I transfered to UCSD last year and a friend of mine transfered to UCSB. We both love where we decided to go. If you’re a social person, you won’t find a problem finding social life at UCSD. I’ve never found myself lacking something to do or somewhere to be. You just have to know the right people.

However, we have the same major (Political Science) and he’s unhappy with his classes at UCSB. He feels that he would have been better off academically going to UCSD. But there are other majors that are definitely better at UCSB (business, econ, College of Creative Studies, etc. I’m sure there are more but I don’t know them.)

UCSB is also more small town than UCSD. Goleta (where UCSB’s campus is) is a small neighborhood. It’s 15 minutes away from Santa Barbara and 2 hours away from Los Angeles (closest metropolitan city). La Jolla/UCSD is about the same size as Santa Barbara and it’s 20 minutes away from San Diego (closest metropolitan city).

The buildings at UCSD look better and the transfer housing is way nicer, but UCSB’s campus is prettier/more beach adjacent. When my best friend was in freshman year, to take her trash out we had to walk down the beach.

UCSB is a tad more diversified than it used to be (when I visited said best friend, even the Asian girls were blonde - true story), but it’s still a hugely Caucasian school with a smattering of minorities here and there. UCSD is hugely Asian, some Caucasian, and again a smattering of everyone else.

I hope this helps someone!
