I went to the reception today and it was amazing! I was surprised and shocked when they told all applicants to stand up and said we were indeed going to be admitted to UCSB! It was such an exciting and happy moment for me that my mom began to cry! lol :D

It was a great event. And ,yes, as the other posters have stated…the students were asked to stand and then told they were admitted. In the breakout session for the College of Engineering, students were told they would all be invited to join the Honors College.

did they say anything about honors college for other majors?

^^ I don’t know. Someone in the engineering college breakout session asked a question about the honors college and we were told that all the in that session would be receive an invitation. One thing that’s still a bit unclear is whether or not students were admitted into their major of choice. We specifically asked if it was possible that someone who applied for engineering, received the invite - and verbal notification of admissions - might actually not have been admitted to the college of engineering. We were told that a few years ago this type of thing did happen but as far as the faculty member knew, this was no longer the case. Her exact words - " that was just cruel".

I’m primarily concerned about ascertaining the relevance of the Chancellor’s receptions to those who DIDN’T receive an invitation. How many people attended the SJ reception? Did anyone ask how many total invitations were given for that reception? Same questions for the LA reception today. And what percentage of total accepted applicants are represented by recipients of the letters? It’s hard to discern the line between the “high achieving” applicants and those who have to wait until the 19th to learn they were accepted.

It was said that the top 10% of the applicant pool was invited. This shows the number of applicants in the UC system over the past 3 years.

ok thanks for all the info @dietz199. i am pre-biology so i hope that i got into honors

^^Dietz- two years ago my S applied to UCSB for Mechanical Engineering and was invited to and attended the reception and heard all the great news. At the end of the month he was crestfallen that he was not offered a spot as a Mechanical Engineering major, but as Computer Sci major. I am glad they are hopefully ending this practice.

For anyone who went to the LA session, did they tell you all that you were admitted? I was invited, but had a previous engagement and couldn’t attend.

Yes they did

I attended the LA reception with my son. The chancellor made a great speech, and I was quite surprised at the size of the event. Looked like there were at least 500+ students there!

The breakout session for the College of Engineering didn’t really add much to what we learned in the general session. Overall, I was quite impressed - as a parent, I thought they did this just right.

Can anyone help me understand why I didn’t get invited to this reception? I have a 3.85 UW GPA/ 4.6 WGPA (top 3% of my class), a 2320 (800M, 800CR, 720W), and decent AP tests and extracurricular activities. I’m really confused. I was told I was a “top applicant” at both UCLA and UCSD, but I’ve heard nothing from UCSB.

(edit, also took subject tests Math 2, Physics, Bio, Chem on which I scored 730 or above on all)

Are you in California? I have no idea because your stats are way better than mine! My gpa is a 4.2 but my SAT score was significantly lower…

Yes, I’m in CA! This sucks.

3.85 seems a little low but one of my friends had a 3.8 who got it so I don’t really know… At least you got it from those other UCs!

3.8UW is an A+ average how is that low and their weighted is a 4.6 and my UW was a 3.76. Don’t worry maybe you didn’t get it because even though you’re in Cali your city may have been too far from LA or San Jose?

I’m in socal… so it’s doubtful I’ll get any news until the 19th. Oh well.

AA… your “info” says you’re in NV. Maybe they saw that? ;)

AA…maybe they had limited number of people they can invite. Honestly, I don’t know how you didn’t get it. My GPA was a 3.85 UW also, but my SAT is waaayyyy lower than yours. lol Don’t worry, you were blessed with UCLA and UCSD! I received nada from UCLA…

Eh well I recieved a Regents invite from UCLA but no engineering likely letter. Admitted to Davis but no regents scholarhip. I was hoping I’d get regents from at least one of the UC schools I applied to but it looks like everyone who got regents from UCSB has already been notified. I really thought I’d have more luck in UC admissions.
