I just received a letter from UCSB about their reception "honoring top applicants" hosted by their chancellor. I am so excited to have received this, and from what I could gather on other threads this all but guarantees admission. However, I am skeptical to believe this and some of these threads are almost a decade old, so I was wondering if anyone else had any input on what this letter really means. UCSB is down and out my number one choice so any input at all is helpful. Thanks.

It’s good to be a little skeptical … a natural defense mechanism to avoid disappointment if you ended up not getting accepted.

It’s true that your outcome can still be accepted, waitlisted, or denied. But not every applicant receives the letter. Therefore, your chances of an admission is higher.

Enjoy and Congratulation!

May I ask if the “letter” was an e-mail or snail mail?
Was it addressed specifically to you or generic applicants?

@DualDegreedoc
The letter was snail mail that was addressed to general applicants. Thanks for the info

You’re probably in. Congratulations.

@sariwa.
Thank you for the information.
Congratulations again.

Hey guys, I just got an email with the title "UCSB Chancellor’s Reception - SAVE THE DATE " and a flyer in the email with very little info, basically saying that you can only come if you’re formally admitted and my “formal invitation will follow in the mail”. What does this mean? I have read many other threads on this, but most seem to have come much earlier, and by mail only. Thanks in advance!

I attended one of the Chancellor’s Receptions this Saturday. I can say with confidence that you got in; if you attend the reception they will ask you to stand and then tell you that you have been accepted. Congrats!

Congrats! I went last Saturday as well! It was a very exciting moment when they announced we were all admitted! :D

This isn’t true for every reception, only the more heavily populated areas such as LA etc. I heard at the Chicago reception they told them they were not guaranteed acceptance, but at the LA reception they did indeed tell us that we were admitted. Good luck!

if i didn’t get an invite to the reception, does that mean I didn’t get in?

No, you may still be accepted and maybe even accepted to the honors program.

How do you sign up for the honors program?

My D did not sign up for honors. Her freshman admission just said admitted into the honors program. You can apply for it later even if you are not admitted to honors as a freshman. I think you have to wait until your sophmore year though. And if you lose your honors status, as my D may this quarter, you can re-apply once you qualify again. The biggest perk is the opportunity to register for classes every quarter earlier than non-honors students.

Does anyone know approximately how many students there are in the honors program during freshman year? I’m wondering how many students are automatically admitted and how many of them actually accept the invite to be in the program.

Are there any classes you are required to take in the honors program?
