I’m currently working on my college apps and I don’t understand what “Admitted to pre-major status in Sociology until prerequisites are satisfied” means. This happened in the UCSB major section. Could someone further explain what this means to me? Would I have to complete those prereqs before I go to college?
I’ve looked at the UCSB general catalog and read about the sociology undergraduate program + recommended programs.
Here’s the link.

Are you a Freshman applicant?
As a Freshman you are placed in a Pre-major status until you meet the course and GPA requirements at UCSB.
From the Website:::
PRE-SOCIOLOGY MAJOR, B.A. – 2015-2016
To qualify for admission into the Sociology major, students must complete the courses in Areas A and B with a UC grade-point average of 2.3 or higher. The courses in Areas C and D will not be included in the pre-major GPA computation but must be taken for a letter grade and will influence the overall major GPA. While completing this required preparation, students will be classified as Pre-Sociology majors. Acceptance into the pre-major does not guarantee admission to full major status. Upon satisfactory completion of the pre-major courses, students must complete a change of major petition, available in the Sociology Undergraduate Office.
Students must complete pre-major courses and achieve the minimum GPA requirements prior to completion of 144 total units. Courses in Area A and B must be completed with a grade of “C-” or higher
