UCSB Transfer - Rate me!

So I plan on transferring to UCSB (not UCB!) for Fall 2012 school year from a community college in California. Right now I have completed nearly all my IGETC requirements filled, math/english (college) is in-progress and I'll need to take a lab in Spring 2011/2012.

I have a ~3.8 GPA. I did tons of E.C in HS and reasonable grades but of course they don't matter when transferring from CC. Also AP classes - 10 units total.

I failed Math 50 once, re-took (not under pass fail) and earned a grade of C. I am now in the next math level, still considered remedial, but will complete college level math by end of Spring.

I'll have close to 40 units completed by end of Fall, and 60 by Spring. I have 20 at the moment. I know anything less than 60=automatic rejection. For Fall I predict at least a 3.0 GPA, struggling with some classes but will manage A's and B's for sure.

Also, FYI - I am now taking the next level of Math under pass/fail because the re-take of Math 50 messed with my non-transferable GPA. UCSB will still see the C, but according to counselor it won't matter to them.

I have almost all A's in transferable classes, and one B.

So, questions:

What are my odds of being accepted into UCSB? UCSB doesn't provide a whole lot of info on transfer, very ambiguous and vague. My counselor said I have a 90% chance of getting in, but I'm not so sure about that.

I will be choosing a totally non-competitive major, literally. Not business, math, english or computer engineering. Barely on the roster! Will this affect my chances positively? I didn't plan on transferring to a Cal state school and I haven't taken a speech class so it wouldn't matter anyways. I don't want to go to any other UC either.

Should I consider applying to other UC schools? UCSB is really the only school I want to go to.

Should I consider private colleges?

thanks!!!

You might me a good candidate for TAG (transfer admission guarantee) for UCSB depending on your math and english levels. Check it out at:

[University of California : Transfer Admission Guarantee](http://uctag.universityofcalifornia.edu/)

There are only 4 days left to apply so check it out quick!

I was told I do not qualify for TAG because I haven’t completed the lab, math, and english requirement. My english requirement is in-progress and I won’t be enrolled in lab/math until Spring.

Multiple counselors said I wasn’t eligible. But how are my stats? Am I a lock for SB? Again, my major is totally non-competitive. I just want to get into the school.

What is your major? Also, what math are you in, have you taken a college level yet? What is your UC transferable GPA? Go to this site:

[University of California: StatFinder](http://statfinder.ucop.edu/statfinder/default.aspx)

and put your info in and you can see the info of other students accepted to UCSB in your (secretive) major.

I will be taking college level math in the spring, right now im one division below college level. Everything else on IGETC is OKAY, though I’ll have to take a lab in the spring to fulfill that requirement.

When I APPLY in NOVEMBER, I’ll only have about 18 or so transferable units, but by the end of Fall I’ll have 40, and by the end of Spring I’ll have the 60 required.

I was told this was OKAY. My GPA is 3.8+. The stat counter you linked is helpful, but does not allow me to choose a major. The troubling part was the unit transfer average. Apparently the average transferable is 90+? Is this bad for me?

My chosen major is global studies, though if that is too competitive I’m okay with political science/history/whatever.

Nothing math/science/computer engineering/business. My counselor was pretty confident about my situation, but now I’m not so sure. So?

You have a good GPA the only thing that I find surprising is how little units you have. So you are taking 22 units this fall and you’ll be taking 20 in the spring, that’s a lot. If you can pull off good grades this fall then I know I would be very very surprised. (If you can pull off a good GPA with that many classes I would admit you if I worked there in admissions)

I don’t really have any good info to offer you because I never heard of anyone in your situation before but if a counselor says it’s fine to apply with 18 units then I guess it’s fine.

Correction I have about 25 units now, I’ll have a little more than 40 after the end of Fall 2011 and will have 60 by Spring 2012.

But the 25 units include 10 AP units, so that’s 15 units from CC - about 6 classes. So am I in trouble or what?

Will they throw out my application because I’m applying with so little units, even though I’ll have 60 by Spring?

They definitely won’t throw out your application. I don’t even think you need more than 60 units unless you don’t want to give them your SAT/ACT (or what ever they are using now) scores. You’ll probably be just fine.

I know they won’t physically throw my app out, but am I at a disadvantage here? I’m taking more classes than I ever have. Next Spring I’ll be taking almost 20.

It will totally crush me if I work so hard doing this classes, only to be rejected in March. Is it appropriate to talk with the head of my chosen major? Speak with him directly, showing my interest in this topic?

I really want to get this done. I don’t think I can wait another two years to get into UC. It has to happen now. UCSB is my school of choice. I haven’t chosen any safeties and my counselor did not suggest any. She was confident I would get in.

But will I?

edit: I did not take the ACT or SAT in HS, though I did take the PSAT and scored OKAY. Not amazing, the math definitely hurt my score.

20 units not 20 classes.

I don’t think you need to put test scores in if you have more than 60 units but then again I’m not sure about much concerning your position.

I will have over 90 units this fall, so you can see how we’re on the opposite sides of the spectrum.

one more question - would it be appropriate to contact the main leaders of my chosen department?

again, it is not a competitive major. if i give them some background on my situation, how much i want to get to this school - will it help my prospects?
