I know it seems crazy that I’m even debating between UCSB or UCR considering that SB is now ranked pretty highly (3rd/4th in the UC system). But in the long run, how important is the name of the school (aka the title it holds) to get into grad school, a job, etc?
I know this sounds shallow but if I go to UCR, I feel as if I’m “settling” but at the same time, I know for sure its going to be a lot more competitive and harder at SB ://
Some points to keep in mind:
- I honestly have NO CLUE what I want to do, (I’m so lost LOL) so my major is undeclared.
- UCSB is slightly farther away than I would like but UCR is about the perfect distance for dorming.
- FAFSA is around the same, SB is slightly more costly
- Visited both campuses and enjoyed both.
- My Stats:
-GPA: 3.75
-SAT (old) : 1790 out of 2400
-ACT : 28
PLEASE HELP YA GIRL OUT SHE LOST AF TY!!
Since you do not yet know what you want to study, then it’s good that both are large enough to offer a broad range of majors and areas of study. It seems to me that the issue for you to consider is how important is university reputation versus location (and campus atmosphere). You’re right that SB has a better reputation overall, but that will do you no good if you do not feel comfortable there. It is important that you choose a university where you feel comfortable and will be able to do your best work. If you are applying to grad school, a 3.8 from UCR will look better than a 3.0 from UCSB. In terms of jobs, important considerations are what you do – internships, experiences, etc. In terms of the two campuses, both are chill but in different ways. At UCSB you have the beach right there and the scene in Isla Vista. At UCR you have more of a desert feel and students strike me as relaxed. Since you’re not commuting you won’t have the parking problems at UCR.
