UCSB vs. UCSD

Hey! Just wanted to get some extra opinions... I had always had my heart set on going to UCSB because I've been to the campus and surrounding areas many times and I think it's absolutely gorgeous. I also applied to UCSD and got in, and after learning they have an awesome psych department, I decided to go there... so I visited it for the first time yesterday and I have to say I was SO disappointed. The campus is really nothing to brag about (except for the library, which is STUNNING)... I got into Revelle and I walked around that area and was less than impressed.

So.. which is more important to all of you? Location or academics? Personally I'd much rather go to UCSB and be happy with the location, but I feel kind of dumb for turning down a university that is ranked much higher. Do you think that going to UCSB instead of UCSD would affect my chances of getting into a good grad school?

Nope, they're not that far different. I think UCSD is around the high 30s and UCSB is in the mid 40s. I don't think it'll matter at all. I'd go with UCSB if I were you since you like it so much.

always go wherever you feel most comfortable and will succeed in. you also have to factor in the people as ucsb has a reputation as a big party school with a lot of preppy kids while ucsd is generally known to be a quiet school with not too much going on. i hope no one who goes to either of these schools takes it personally as its just what i've always heard.

erika88psych - which school did you decide on?

follow your heart, not the ranking. you can do better and get more from the school you like
