UCSB has a nice coast/beach

bumping bump bump

Awakened,

Count yourself darned lucky that you were accepted to UCSB. It is a terrific school, and I would be perfectly comfortable (and proud) if my son attends next fall. School -- any school -- is what you make of it. With as many students as UCSB has, there are bound to be plenty of people who have things in common with you, and who are not interested in the heavy drinking and partying.

By the way, I understand that the business econ major with an accounting emphasis is quite good. If my son attends, that is what he will be majoring in.

UCSB, wow to begin....

1) It is an "intellectual" school filled with people wearing pseudo-intellectual black horn rimmed glasses, just like me (j/k). But honestly, a lot of people have had other offers to much higher schools (UCLA, Berkeley, Brandeis, USC, UCSD, just to name a few). We do that book learnin' thang (j/k, gosh I'm bad).

1.5) Hot girls

2) Partying too much is, well, an independent choice. It is your personal choice. I party twice a week, Fri and Sat. Yeah I drink, but I know when to stop. Also I have a 3.64. It is how you manage your priorities.

2.5) Hot girls

3) Not everyone drinks. And nobody will make fun of you for not drinking. Some of my friends go to parties just to dance. No drinking, just dancing. If you don;t dance there are PLENTY of other things to do. Don't fret.

4) Did I mention the hot girls?

Downsides:

1) When the wheather is nice it sometimes is too hard to go to class. The beach just calls you out. The pool, wow. And it does not help that we have VERY attractive student bodies (student body/ student bodies, get it, huh? Huh? hehe).

2) Drunken Isla Vistan men can be a little fiesty. Sorry, I have not done anything, but MANY of my friends shout out cat calls. Okay once, but I was drunk, and it WAS TO A KAT, (rather Kate, she hates Kat). But there is this type of thing anywhere. Yes, even at bland, boring UCI. Trust me, my hot female friends go there.

3) Sunburns. I know it sounds dumb, but yeah, technically this is a downside to life on the beach.

4) Crappy waves. Okay, so you are thinking good winter break (not the actual break, but surf term) since it is a south facing beach. So images of Malibu come up. But, dude, nah. Good 1-3 feet swells sucks. There is actually an okay point break at Coal Oil Point, just avoid campus point, it really sucks. If you are a hardcore surfer, then Rincon is just a few miles to the south, but it is luck when it breaks. Go to UCSD, if you are really into surfing.

There are a lot more things to say, but I just can;t think of any riiiiight now. So hope this helps.

ucsb_dude: thanks for being helpful! i'll definitely look to you if i have more questions about ucsb. what is your major and how are you finding the curves/difficulty of classes?

bumping bump bump

by the way, i read this on a ucsb comm somewhere else (paraphrasing)

"most of the girls at ucsb are WHITE, BLONDE, TAN, RICH. they all wear abercrombie, american eagle, holister, and have luis vuitton purses"
is this true? haha cuz to a certain extent, that's how my hs is, which i'm trying to get away from for college....

haha what high school do you go to? lol

well i go to a small private all-girls hs that is 70% white haha. i am filipina and my hs is only prob 10%+ asian.

Haha. That's ironic awaken. I got into the same UCs as you and I'm deciding between I and SB. I'm leaning toward SB cause I'm trying to get away from the all asians that I go to high school with, which is probably like 80% asian or something.

Haha, that's funny. I guess from being with white people at school I've gotten pretty white-washed, I kinda wish UCSB was a bit more balanced, instead of 60% white and around 20% Asian, maybe 50% white, 30% asian, somewhere around there, lol. And the other whites should go to the other schools to balance it out (say UC Irvine).

Don't get me wrong, I'm still very connected with my culture and everything. But when I set foot on UC Irvine I just did not feel at home at all.

That's cool that you are considering UCSB, as am I. From the likes of CC, it doesn't seem like a lot of people are that excited about it, lol.

Same here. Haha. I'm asian too, but man. It gets quite monotonous. And many people at my school are going to UCI as well! It's just like another extension of UCI, so I really don't want to go there. I need some change.

UCSB's party atmosphere is kinda scaring me though, cause I'm pretty much a giant prude who isn't into the druken partying. Still, I think I can be happy and find things to do besides drinking. I dunno! UCSB seems to offer a more "traditional" college experience, where everyone dorms and whatnot.

PS. when I set foot on UCI, I'm like "omgosh, am I back at highschool?" =P

ya same for me! "a giant prude who isn't into the drunken partying", that's definitely me. haha, well maybe not a "giant prude", but those big parties SB is notorious for are just not my thing.

and then Irvine is Asian Central like we've established, and Davis is really really far and in the middle of nowhere.

So that leaves UCSB as the feasible alternative :/.

well they say, college is what you make of it :)

UCSB Is one of the best places you can go!

1) very good school
2) Hot GIRLS!
3) Beach
4) Great Weather
5) one of the best social atmospheres you can ever be in

UCSB does have partying, and no it is not right next door every single night. It is usually friday and saturday. Secondly its not a party everywhere. There is a select one or two streets that have the partying, and if you care about studying you dont live on that street. Yes I party, I go to school, I have a 3.5, and I am very happy here. Everyone is relaxed, sais hi to you when you walk bye, classes are cool, and there is a million things to do. Also to know: The girls are not all white blonde chicks. You have all sorts of girls and guys down here with all kinds of interests. I dont know what else to say.... UCSB ROCKS

i'm deciding between I and SB for the same reasons. not a big partier, but i'm a whitewashed asian that can't stay at Irvine, plus it's too close to home. I guess SB it is?

yup myname1sjude thats exactly my situation (whitewashed asian hahaha), i've contemplated ucsb a lot and i think i will be happy there

Hi, just thought I'd add my thoughts too... I read these boards last year when I was deciding on colleges, so I know it's probably helpful to hear from people who actually attend the schools. But anyway, yeah, UCSB is awesome. I'm so glad I chose the school.

I was not a partier at ALL before coming to UCSB, so I was pretty worried about how I was going to adjust and make friends. But it turned out that there were plenty of people in the same boat. Sure there's a lot of partying going on when the weekend rolls around, but lots of people enjoy just sitting around and watching movies. If you want to try partying a little bit, then there's tons of opportunities to do so. If you don't like it, then you don't have to go out to where the parties are. It's all about who your friends are, and with all the social events and handshaking you'll do during the first week, you'll probably be surprised at how quickly you'll find your group.

But yeah, there is quite a bit of relaxing that goes on at UCSB, but I think that's what I like most about it. We all want to have a good college experience, so we make our weekends fun, but when it comes down to it, we all realize that we have to study. And let's say that it's a party night, but you'd rather get some work done on your big paper or something, people aren't going to make fun of you or think you're crazy. So yeah, like someone else said, the amount you party is up to you.

Well I'm not sure what else to say, so if you have any questions, go ahead and ask.

thanks bgrapes!

bumpage

i had a friend who went to UCSB last year. he wasnt much of a partier and he too was intimidated at first. but ive been talking to him a lot and hes loving it there. there are always parties if you want but there it is also great for small gatherings with close friends. plus theres always the beach. as for davis its a common misconception that its boring because its in the middle of nowhere. i went to visit my friend up there and had a great time. its really diverse and everyones very friendly. there is both really big parties and small groups there as well. hope this helps

wussup all,

i'm a transfer student...and i was also considerin ucsb...

but now i'm not too sure if i want to even go.. mainly because of the whole party scene.

you see, basically, my life is very "authentic" - meaning i just want a solid friendship with 2 other guys to kick it with and they'd be my buddies for LIFE.

i could care less about the partying, because it seems so illogical and temporary to me. it's nothing.

i've never had a single guy friend to kick it with, just acquantances here and there. no i didn't do anything; i just wasn't the type that they were.

so ucsb is too much hype. i'm trying my best to avoid that stereotypical life as much as possible.

I just have to rely on myself to make me happy.

everybody keeps tellin me 'you can't rely on other people to make you happy' - god this statement seems so FALSE but in actuality if you think deeply enough it can be true.
