I dislike self labeling. :(
OK OK. The deadline for UCSC TAG agreement snuck up on me .
As of Summer '10 I have 57.8 units that are transferable with 2.90 GPA. I went to the TAG site, filled out the online form, and realized some of the classes I thought weren't transferable actually are so my anticipated GPA of 3.1 was lowered to 2.90!!!! I freaked out. I obviously took way more than necessary to satisfy the IGETC (to raise my GPA). I had a difficult time the first year / two semesters because of a health condition (if you must know it was a small brain tumour and I was diagnosed with epilepsy, then diagnosed with anxiety, then diagnosed with non-epileptic seizures etc....) during that time I was 'not in a good place' and was wrongly diagnosed multiple times placed on heavy medication and before I knew it I had a BUNCH of W's because I was new to college and thought they could be removed or retaken because of my condition (didn't think about talking to teachers either-- i was unaware they could accommodate me). It took me a while to get used to condition and medication & life overall.. But I persevered and my grades climbed back up once I was in a more stable condition. My grades show this improvement of W's to mostly b's with some c's to b's and a's . At my new school I am on the Dean's List (maintained 3.00 GPA). I don't have very many extra curricular activities besides MeChA club for two semesters before I moved to a different area. This school is lacking in the club department. T____T; I take a lot of units per semester though (16.5 - 17) if that helps. :) I am going to apply for Fall '11. . .

I don’t think Anthropology at UCSC is an impacted major but a GPA of 2.9 is not likely to be very competitive since you can not use TAG with a GPA of less than 3.00. I don’t know if it is possible, you should check with your guidance counselor or the admissions office at UCSC, and I doubt it will be very palatable for you, to not apply for Fall 2011, stay at your CC for another year to get your GPA up over a 3.00 and obtain a new TAG agreement with UCSC to transfer in Fall 2012. The harsh reality is that due to your health problem you essentially lost a year of study at your true capabilities when you are healthy and the only solution might be to make that year up.

You still might be admitted for 2011 if the admissions office at UCSC takes your health problem into consideration and accepts you even though your current GPA is lower than they would normally require. Before doing that though I would advise you to make an honest evaluation of how much your illness set you back and if you are truly prepared academically and physically to take on the rigors of starting at a UC in 2011 instead of taking an extra year to put your self on the soundest possible academic footing and further recovering from your illness.

hmm. I don’t think it should be much of a problem since I had a high GPA in high school and was qualified for U.C. then. I will talk to a counselor today regarding this–but it will be heartbreaking to take on another year as I’ve been going to CC since 2007. Which is before I graduated from H.S. in 2008. … . T___T;

Thanks, after some thought I am going to apply anyway. I am working on the last prereq. for Anthro. (prereqs are anthro 1, 2 & 3). I’m very qualified to start on my upper division classes right away. For IGETC to be complete I just need a Math class (which I’ll take in Spring).
Other schools I’m considering if I feel impatient and don’t get into UCSC are SJSU and SFSU.
I am eligible for a TAG agreement with UCSD and UCD.
I have some decisions to make lol.

I’d definitely consider Davis but it is far from a lot of big cities, so I’d have to visit & see for myself before applying for the TAG.

I just got back from speaking to a counselor at my school and unfortunately the 2.90 is correct … etc. But he says I do have a good chance of getting in without TAG and should definitely apply for Fall '11. He took into consideration my transcript, my major etc… I feel more optimistic but I want to find some secure back-up schools.

Are SFSU & SJSU difficult to get into with my GPA?

You’ll get in SFSU or SJSU - I don’t think both. But about UCSC, talk to the UC rep that goes to your CC. Ask him/her if you can be placed on the “Director’s Review” for admission because of your illness… it’ll heavily increase your chances and also mention your disease when doing the personal statements.

Btw, the fact that you’re Mexican/American does absolutely nothing for your admission. It’s illegal for them to give admission based on ‘racial distinctions’

Just to be safe, I would apply to at least 10 schools (both UC’s and CSU’s)… I know its a lot of money but it’s worth the extra options. With a 2.90 nothing is a sure thing. Avoid applying to UCSB, UCI, UCB, UCSD, UCD, UCLA, CSULB, CSSLO, and SDSU - guaranteed rejection. If you think you can bump your GPA up to a 3.0 by the end of fall then apply to those mid tier UC’s but if not don’t do it (3.0 is usually there cut off line)…

Thanks for the info about director’s review. I know for a fact by the end of Fall I’ll be above a 3.0 so I’m confident it won’t be an issue . My illness will definitely be in my personal statement, and also issues about ‘racial’ struggles. I know UC’s don’t openly practice affirmative action, but if it’s in your personal statement I’m sure it makes a difference in deciding how much real passion you have for some cause or what have you. Where I’m from (not the bay area) it is a big issue which led me to study more about the world around me, question things, and overall become a better person from it (not let the constant attacks on people of my race/ethnicity and even myself, get me down & actually help me be more proactive). As an Anthropology major (Cultural emphasis) you learn about what makes up people’s realities within certain cultures – this includes what makes a certain ethnicity within American culture can make a person struggle more because of this different sort of reality they face. My ethnicity is as much as a part of my story as anything else because it has effected my reality…So why would I leave that out? OK I went on a sort of tangent with Affirmative Action and what not . lol…
Back to the point: thanks for the advice <3

Oh, yeah I know. But the time to apply for the Fall 2011 TAGs is this month Sept. 1-30th. And with MOST colleges (some have different rules for the TAG) it seems that at time of application you need to have above a 3.0. So that is why I am applying the other way…
