How was your dorm life??

I'm really curious on this one!
Please share your experiences with your life in one of the dorms in UCSC and please list which college you stayed at (:
Thanks!

I’d like to know too! I’m applying for housing right now and I’m hoping I’d get a room in an apartment, but I don’t know how likely that will be for a Winter transfer. I might have to live in the residence halls or The Village if I don’t get an apartment… please share your experiences! :stuck_out_tongue: My college affiliation is Crown, by the way.

Cowell dorms are the oldest dorms on campus and I’ve found them to be pretty comfortable. At times they feel a bit crowded, but its definitely livable. The residence halls are definitely the best way to form a social network in your first few weeks and are pretty fun year round.

I’m in Crown College. The dorms consist of two clusters of four houses each, forming the upper quad and lower quad.
I’m in a small triple on the third floor. That’s the last floor, and it has vaulted ceilings, so it’s a little better. And we got new furniture. It would have been amazing to have the room as a double though…
The first couple of days I just went out and talked to everyone pretty much. I think everyone kind of did.
My house is pretty much amazing. Haha.
We all party together, go out into upper campus together, and basically just have an amazing time.
People say Crown is boring, and full of geeks, but I think that you get what you look for. You can find all kinds of people here! :)

I’m at Porter, and the dorms this year are brand new.
Despite this, however, there is still a TON of construction going on, which I doubt will be over by next year.
Other than that, the dorms are a lot bigger than I expected. People here are amazingly social and easygoing–there’s always someone to talk to.
On weekends, the bathrooms do get gross, but it’s not unbearable. Overall, Porter is amazingly cool!

what is Oakes like … some one say it wasnt as pretty as the other colleges

I disagree. Its rooms are really big and it has a GORGEOUS view of the ocean. There are lots of trees and it looks like it belongs in the woods-the most wood cabin-y of all the colleges. I think it’s really pretty.

Oakes is surprisingly nice. It is by itself close to the bottom of campus with a lot of open green area and one of the best views of the ocean on campus.

The problem I always have with Oakes/8 is that you are so far away from everything! I had a discussion down there at 8am, so I had to get up at 7 if I wanted to grab a bite beforehand.

i worked at ucsc this summer, and i stayed in one of the dorms… cant remember which ones but they are right next to the hill which leads down to the athletic fields. those dorms were newer and really nice ! the singles were pretty big, but the multiples got kinda crowded.

it was weird though, in the building i was in (sorry cant remember) all the rooms were basically the same size and shape… however there were 2 or 3 rooms that were WAY bigger for no apparent reason. one was under a stair well, and one was upstairs and had a bigger window… this is all from memory though.

Yeah Oakes is pretty removed from everything…but I find it much easier to walk to and from than Crown hahah. And I used to hate getting to the Social Sciences building because either way you go, you have to walk up a huge hill and I have joint problems, so its really likely that I’ll be late for class.
One thing I always wondered though, why does Crown only have a one way bus stop? Poor Crown!

I’m at Crown and it’s really not bad once you figure out which paths work well.

Oakes is pretty far from everything, but it’s still nice and with the shuttles it isn’t that hard to get wherever you’re going on campus.

aleiram51- dude crown 3rd floor rooms as doubles were SWEEET. 2 years on the 3rd floor. moving in and moving out sucked but sooooo sweet as doubles…

voyager21- might be a bit late but i highly recommend the dorms as a transfer… its just easier to meet people though yes, they will be freshman… the village i hear is ok but its REALLY far from campus unless you’re the type of person who enjoys a good workout on your way to class.

I know!!
They’re small triples now… and sadly, I am in one. But if you get them as doubles they are amazing!

SO much space! :)

you most likely stayed at cowell/stevenson based on your description.

I’m at Merrill and you get used to walking up a hill after awhile. Oakes is pretty far away from campus but not too far and I walked all the way from merrill to there and it took about 30 minutes. Their dining hall is not that great though.

The rooms all have plenty of space unless you have a triple. I’m in a double but my friend is in a triple and it is pretty small.

^ yeah i was pretty sure it was stevenson too, just didnt want to get it wrong.

i really enjoyed staying on campus. just a week, but it was comfortable… and the food was good actually. def could get old but it was good for the time being

Hello! I am planning on attending UC Santa Cruz Fall 2010, and right now i am deciding between Porter or Crown. I just would like to hear the advantages and disadvantages of both. I would really appreciate it

i am going to major in bio. i don’t mind the drug scene. i don’t like prepps. i play video games, ahaha :] i play tennis.

HELP ME OUT!

If it is between Porter and Crown…for you it sounds like Crown.

This might sound stupid. but are there windows with nice view in the dorms of Cowell, college 9 and 10?

It really depends. Some rooms might face a beautiful quad, but some might face a parking lot or trees. I had a nice view of the quad at C10. However, there were people on my floor that had a view of the C9/10 parking lot. It was basically the same thing for Cowell. View from C9 isn’t really great, but I guess it depends on where you are situated.
