Hi! I’m currently a sophomore at UCSC, majoring in Literature (Creative Writing) and Sociology (sociology was originally my minor, but this year I’m going to make it my second major). I declared my major at the end of my freshman year and declared my minor in fall 2015.
Applied schools: UCLA, UCD, UCSD, UCB
GPA w/o fall 2015 grades: 3.6
GPA w/ fall 2015 grades: 3.46
GE’s: almost done, have 3 left
Major pre-req’s: done
P/NP: took a math class & an anthro class for p/np just for the GE req’s, passed both
Volunteer/work: part-time internship working for an author, volunteering at a museum, volunteered at a nonprofit grassroots organization, gained recognition from the National Society of Collegiate Scholars & EOP Honors (although I’m not in EOP)
EC’s: I was a featured author in the Creative Writing newsletters and a UCSC literary blog.
Personal statements: strong
I also included some significant volunteer work I did in high school, but I mainly focused on what I’ve achieved during my freshman year at UCSC.
Anyone wanna chance me and possibly offer me some advice from here on out? Feel free to share your UC intercampus transfer info as well
Hi! Currently at UC Merced. Aiming for UCSB! applied only as a Feminist/Gender Studies major, but i plan on double majoring in Economics, and minoring in Chicano Studies
hope I get into UCSB!
Applied schools: UCLA, UCSD, UCI, UCR, and UCSB
GPA w/o fall 2015 grades: 3.29
GPA w/ fall 2015 grades: 3.46
GE’s: almost done, have 1 left
7 Course Pattern: done
Major pre-req’s: Feminist/Gender Studies doesn’t have prereqs
P/NP: one class, undergraduate studies - not related to my major
Volunteer/work: Resident Assistant/Peer Mentor
EC’s: very involved with student government
@UCMtoUCSBHopeful I think you’re a pretty competitive applicant, but UCLA and UCSD may be a bit of a reach. I’m pretty sure for UC intercampus transfers, they weigh our freshman year pretty heavily since that’s the only complete academic year we’ve had so far.
I think you have a good shot, your only downfall is really a lower gpa (and being from another UC campus). Did you apply as a sociology major at each campus? At UCB the acceptance rate for the social sciences was like 23% or something like that… So you’re up against a lot of competition who probably have higher gpas… but you sound really passionate so I think your personal statements could pull you through. Did you have an particular bad grade that dragged your gpa down?
@Molisha I applied as an English major at each campus, and Sociology as an alternative major (because really I didn’t start working towards a double major until this year). I don’t really expect to get into UCB because they generally discourage UC intercampus transfers anyway.
My GPA went down this past quarter (fall 2015) because I got straight B’s. 2 B+'s and 1 B-, specifically. How about UCLA, UCD & UCSD?
UCD Yes. I think you definitel can. UCSD also yes. BUT UCLA maybe. I got into UCLA as a chinese major with a 3.6 gpa, but english is probably a bit more competitive, however, honestly your ecs seem to fit english perfectly (Probably a lot better than other applicants) Your only downfall for ucla like I said is gpa and also they will read your apps w/o knowing the grades you got in your remaining GEs
not that it makes much of a difference, but my gpa now is a 3.48, not 3.46
UCs value upward trajectory, so i’m hoping that they’ll take my gpa going up from a 3.29 to a 3.48 into consideration
Yeah, UCSD and UCLA may be out of reach, but yolo! Again, I hope me getting straight As and a B+ will help lol
Thank you @k0alas5ever, you’re honestly very competitive. A lot of my friends form UCM a year ago were granted admission into UCLA and other high ranked UCs with 3.4 GPAs, one of them was an English major, and her fall grades were barely a 3.0. I think you’ll honestly be fine
@Molisha what do you mean they’ll read @k0alas5ever’s app w/o the remaing GEs, you aren’t referring to fall grades right? cause from my understanding, no UC will review an application without Fall grades…
No. I’m saying, that since his GEs won’t be done by the end of spring they won’t be sure if he’ll do well in those courses or not = bigger risk than taking someone who already finished them and did well in them.
@Molisha oh ok lol @k0alas5ever, again, i think you’ll be fine. Considering you’re still way above the cutoff threshold (3.2). Not completing your GEs shouldn’t hold you back, getting them done is by no means a priority. It’s more of a luxury cause of UC Reciprocity
Question: since I’ve already declared my major & minor at UCSC, will each of my major classes transfer over to the UC campuses I applied to? Or would I have to start from scratch? My current major is Literature at UCSC, but I applied as English to all the campuses (except UCSD, I applied as Literature/Writing).
Question #2: when is a good time to request my UCSC advisers for a letter of reciprocity?
once you’re at whichever UC you’re trying to attend, you’re going to have to find out if the classes you’ve taken now are equivalent to the courses at the other UCs. i tend to use Assist and just compare classes at UCM to UCSB’s
(hope that makes sense)
I’m assuming you send in a letter or reciprocity after you’ve SIRd right?
@UCMtoUCSBHopeful ok, so at this point my admission depends mostly on my GPA, right? I hope I didn’t need to get my letter of reciprocity before I submitted my app…
completing GEs is not going to hold you back nor is it grounds for admission, it’s just helps your transfer process from one UC to another cause of Reciprocity.
Right now, what your admission is dependent on is fulfilling the 7 course pattern, meeting the 60/90 unit minimum, and fulfilling as much major prereqs as possible, and of course GPA. where you stand, I honestly don’t think you have any reason to worry. As i said, my friend applied as an English major this past spring and got into UCLA (and all the SoCal UCs), even tho she barely met a 3.0 GPA for fall grades, finished the 7 course pattern in spring, and had a 3.4 GPA. She was an amazing person, so i’m not surprised she was granted admission
from what i’ve gathered, UCD doesn’t read personal statements, all the other UCs you applied to do (not sure if that helps lol) you don’t need a letter of Reciprocity until after you’ve decided to attend another UC @k0alas5ever - you’re going to be fine. i’m excited for you!
