UCSC to UCLA/UCB Transfer Tips

Hi everyone–I am a student at UCSC and I’m majoring in Feminist Studies. I know that inter-UC transfers are difficult, but I really want to be either a GWS major at Berkeley or a Gender Studies major at UCLA, it’s been a longterm goal since I graduated high school.

This is what I know about transferring…

  • You need a competitive GPA, 3.7+
  • You need to have completed pre-req’s for your major at the college you wish to transfer to
  • Complete your GE’s at the college you are at right now, so you can get a letter of UC Reciprocity

Right now, my questions are…

  1. How do I know if Feminist Studies 1 is equivalent to Gender Studies 1 at UCLA? Who would I contact for this information?
  2. Is a transfer possible if I have a competitive GPA, prereqs, and GE’s done? How difficult will it be?
  3. Also, do you have any general tips for me about the transfer process??

Thanks!

bump…please help lol

It’s all possible, except I don’t know how the classes match. I’m sure someone in both depts can help. In the meantime, look closely at the titles and descriptions. But all you need are the lower division major reqs completed so it shouldn’t be that difficult.

Hey there! Intercampus transfer isn’t actually that difficult - depending on the campus you’re trying to transfer to. UCLA actually supposedly gives CCC and other UC students equal priority in transfer admissions. UCB supposedly discourages intercampus transfers, but if you scour this website you’ll find many success stories that suggest otherwise. As Lindy said, your best guess is to try to match the course descriptions with courses offered at UCSC. Last summer, I wasn’t sure if one course at my UC matched a prereq at UCLA, so I emailed the undergraduate admissions office and they told me what course at my UC would give me credit for that prerequisite. I imagine emailing them right now wouldn’t be such a good idea as they are probably flooded with emails about admissions from freshman and transfer applicants for this coming fall, but if you wait til June-ish I’m sure they’d be happy to help. Hope this helps!

Thank you so much! @lindyk8 and @fncrane :+)

Hey @collegeambitious ,

I’m currently at UCSC and was admitted to UCLA as an intercampus transfer.
The few things you’ve mentioned are extremely important. It’d be good to look at the application now to visualize how best to present yourself in the future. Apart from that, look into the letter of reciprocity and staying under the unit cap. Feel free to message me with any questions

@ Lemanie
What major and GPA did you have? Did the counselors help you in deciding what choice to make when intentionally planning to transfer? Also is it better to take GEs at UCSC or at a community college to reach the 90 credit requirement? Sorry for all the questions but if you can answer these questions, it would be greatly appreciated!
