I've heard that the internet connection in the dorms is not suitable for heavy duty use such as, gaming and HD Video uploading.

Is this true? If so, is it possible for me to get my own internet that is not affiliated with the UCSC internet, like AT&T or Time Warner Cable?

If you’re using Cruznet (wireless), there can be some speed issues. Resnet (wired) works quite fast for me especially during times when usage isn’t as heavy. I’ve had no issues with it.

NOTE: There is a 2GB upload limit per day. That HD video uploading is most likely not going to happen unless it’s a very small amount. Also note that caps on bandwidth are common at many colleges. UCSC has a fairly generous policy. I recall reading about another campus where their limit was 1 GB total (upload and download) per week.

As for purchasing your own internet: only if you live off campus.

If you use Steam, it will not run on the campus wireless (cruznet). However, you can fairly easily get access to cruznet secure. You just have to google cruznetsecure + your OS, and you’ll find instructions. It has no restrictions on which programs can connect to the internet.

Resnet (wired) will do well for you otherwise. I’ve never had an issue using it, any I do a decent amount of online gaming. The automatic updates through Steam run very quickly too.

@econtransfer: Not %100, but I believe all residential buildings on campus have Resnet.

@eablinksum: I don’t know exactly how, but you can. The school has a process to get the console approved for online access. Pretty simple. For my 360 I had to send my console’s MAC address to ITS so they could give it network access. I imagine it’s similar for the PS3.
