Which college should I choose? On one hand, UCSC is more prestegious and is gorgeous, but on the other CSULB has a better Greek life and party scene. Also, it is $10,000 less expensive.
I went to both colleges 20 years ago. I liked both, but I loved UCSC. It is hands down a better experience and a better education. However if “party scene” is what’s important to you, you will not be happy at UCSC. It’s not that there isn’t a fair amount of pot smoking and alcohol, there is. But it is more low key and not at all “Animal House” like. Santa Cruz is not a place welcoming to Greek Life. In fact it is an anti-Greek life place. If you are a party person who wants to put out the minimum to moderate effort on your education, go to Long Beach. If you are a person who is into learning and want a top flight education, go to Santa Cruz. There are lots of clubs and organizations to join. There was an ultimate frisbee team, a sailing team, swimming and tennis. No football. Be honest with yourself and go to the college where you will be at home. CSULB is a solid choice, but it is no UCSC.
Are finances a major concern? I also agree it is important to find a good"fit".
Two dramatically different schools! You need to ask yourself where you’d be happier: a hippy, northern forest (UCSC) or a more conventional southern suburb (CSLB). The locations will affect your experience much more than issues of prestige/extent of Greek scene.
