So my buddy had his admission rescinded from UCSC for drumroll please
Missing a transcript from a community college for one class taken there that is not in any way necessary for his admission. He only took the class for his own benefit. The transcript was supposed to arrive on July 1st, but he had totally forgotten about it since it was such an unimportant transcript (to him, at least.) Yesterday at 5 p.m., he was emailed a notice about how his admission has been rescinded due to a violation of his contract, which included meeting all deadlines.
Now I know that ultimately, the blame lies on him. But I’m pretty sure sending something (that’s objectively unimportant) a little over a week late isn’t worth ripping away four years of this kid’s life away from him.
I’m fairly sure that there’s some leniency on appeals written over missed deadlines. But I’d like to know if anyone’s been in the same boat and what the end result is. I’d also like some advice on how to word the letter of appeal.
Hi there, I’m currently in the same situation now. My case was quite bit different, I retook my AP Calculus and Ap Biology through online course system, normally the grades I regained suppose replace the old ones, however, my high school, said they added these two grades on my transcript and they also told me that UCSC will reconsider my GPA. I believed them and let them sent my transcript out. Last month when I checked my student portal, my application status turned to cancellation, I felt like I was being fooled and wrote the appeal immediately. And later I asked 4 of my high school teachers to write letters of rec for me.
Yesterday when I called the admission office, they said my appeal was denied. I was shocked and more importantly, since the time my admission was cancelled, I had never receive any email or notification from UCSC. However, the guy who picked up the phone said he was able to set up a time for me to have a conversation with the Director of Admission. So I guess I still have one shot.
Students report admission rescinded every year do to various reasons and it is a hard lesson that there are no ‘undo’ button in meeting requirements for college. Your minimizing the issue is not helpful and he in no way should reflect that dismissive attitude in his appeal. Not submitting transcript for every college borders on academic dishonesty. After all the college does not know what is on it, whether it has disciplinary actions on it, failed classes etc. Why he took it and what his own motivations were is completely immaterial–college classes are a permanent part of your record.
So first you say he didn’t send it, then you say he sent it only a week late. So I don’t know how to word an appeal, not knowing if they have the transcript or not. Just ask politely for reinstatement and express responsibility at not being timely in the initial submission of materials required for admission. Reaffirm interest in UCSC.
@EllenZL I can’t understand what your issue is. What it sounds like was that you didn’t report your grades correctly in the first place. Was it that you didn’t report the correct grades on the application as was shown on your transcript? What did you think you were going to do if you didn’t ‘let’ your school send your transcript? They still need your transcript no matter what.
Your friend did the hard part - getting accepted. Conditions of acceptance are spelled out in plain English - your friend probably got several reminders. It is a shame he/she would let something so silly trip them up.
It is quite possible the seat was surrendered to someone on the wait list. At this stage, the only thing he/she can do is contact the school and ask for forgiveness.
@BrownParent I retook the 2 classes I had shortfall, and I regained both B through the online course system. The new grades I regained should replace the old ones because those were the same classes. But my high school just added them to my transcript, they didn’t replace them.
See link from Ms. Sun blog below – it looks like UCSC may have over admitted by up to 1000 students and admissions is using transcripts that are late or slightly off to correct for this mistake. There is a petition for students in this situation and according to Ms Sun UCSC is violating policy.
