I want to major in oceanography (the major has a different name at every university). I am currently committed to UH Manoa but got off the waitlist for UCSC yesterday. I really don’t know what to chose so it would be really helpful and appreciated if I would get some advice and opinions. I would be coming to UCSC as an Earth Sciences major. I have heard a lot of people don’t like UCSC and were mad at the university during the grad student strikes. But also a lot of people transfer from UH to a UC cuz they don’t like it. Thanks in advance for any advice <3
Cost and debt at each?
I haven’t gotten a FA package from UCSC yet (it’s coming tomorrow) but I received a cal grant for $12k. Total cost for UCSC is estimated to be $37k. With scholarships and financial aid from Hawaii my total cost is around $15k per year.
UHM gives you so muc. Closr to the dep ocean and cltural pepl.
This is a tough choice. For the oceanography major I lean towards UH Manoa with its wonderful facilities, proximity to discovery and the talented faculty in that area. Not to mention the major you want. UCSC is also a great school. UCs are well regarded academically, hard to get into, and UCSC is considered a fun, beautiful and active place to be. Having to be an earth sciences at UCSC versus oceanography major at UHM would also be a concern if oceanography is your true passion. Check the housing prices at each school as well. The culture is different at each school and then you must consider if you can study and not be distracted by Hawaii’s beautiful scenery. My vote is UHM. What did you choose?
If you go to Hawaii, be aware of and plan for the 14 day quarantine for new arrivals from out of state or other islands.
