By the way, has anyone else contracted “transferitis”…?

lol yeah… right after summer ended >_<

That’s when it started for me, too, but it’s only gotten worse since getting admitted to UCSC. I blame the conditions of admission, which made it acceptable for me to get C’s in my two classes this semester, haha. Sooooooo, our undergrad GPA totally resets once we start at UCSC, right…? ;)

haha yeah, it resets :]

Is there a Facebook group for UCSC Winter 2010 transfers? I checked and couldn’t find one. It’d be awesome to network with fellow transfer students.

Voyager: Good to know, haha. But these CC grades probably still matter to graduate and professional schools, right?

On Tangent: I couldn’t find one either, so I decided to start one up (along with one for politics majors):

@empire, yeah grad schools looks at all undergrad coursework >_< I really need to stop procrastinating! lol

empire: umm, i can mostly give more of a “heads up” if you were an incoming freshman, but i’m not completely sure about any information for a transfer student. however, i think if you are living off campus you should definitely think about bringing a car here and just purchasing a parking permit. santa cruz metro offers free bus rides (well you don’t pay, but they charge the school) for anyone with a valid UCSC id. But buses can get full and can be very annoying to depend on for morning classes (it’s doable though). if you have any specific questions though, i should be able to answer those.

so for the conditions of admissions it says complete the fall semester with at least a 2.0. Does taking a W in one or two classes disqualify me because im getting really lazy in my last semester before transferring to UCSC

I don’t know, but if you’re going to withdraw with a W, you better call the admissions office and tell them.

[edit] ASAP.

Has anyone received an acceptance package in the mail yet?

Mine came in last week :]

@ everyone who’ll be attending UCSC this Winter, are you living on-campus, off-campus or at home/commuting? I live an hour away and I’m having the hardest time choosing whether I should live on campus or commute =/

I have yet to check the mail today, so I really hopefully it’s here! Commuting from an hour away? Isn’t that going to make skipping class seem like a great idea pretty often? I’m planning on living off-campus, myself. And I don’t want any roommates either. I like having my own private space, just me and my dog. I know that’s how I’ll be most successful. What do you think the option would be for you?

If your location listed is correct and you’re coming from San Jose, remember that you will have to travel over 17. A highway that is not only notorious for bad traffic (making that “one hour away” more like two hours depending when you’re driving through), but also bad weather conditions. Everything from snow, mudslides, and fires can shut that highway down and there are few other options to go around that won’t be horrifically out of the way.

in all honesty, you should live off campus. my home is about an hour away from ucsc and i could not even THINK about driving on highway 17 on a daily basis. especially if you are at school studying a little late, it’s a bother not being able to go home soon or having to drive home late at night. i have a place about 10 mins from campus and i couldn’t be happier. if you live on campus its a bit more expensive, but getting to class is SO easy. I found myself going to more classes when i lived on campus my freshman year than soph off campus though. also you can get single rooms on campus, so you should be able to get a lot of privacy.
however if it’s a financial decision, you can take the highway 17 express bus for $4 one way and that makes things a little easier, but its nice to have a car on campus (have to pay for parking permits too).

I received mine last Friday.

Okay, cool. If you were part of the first batch of decisions and received yours on Friday, then I guess I should receive mine later this week since I was part of the second batch. I was just hoping I didn’t fall through a crack or something, since they said it should take less than two weeks, and it’s been 2 weeks since I received my admission decison.

By the way, for new people, join the UCSC Winter 2010 Transfers group on Facebook:

<a href=“Facebook Public Group | Facebook”>Facebook Public Group | Facebook;

[edit] Oh wait. Looking back in this thread, I noticed you weren’t part of the first batch of decisions, but the third batch. I’m thinking I should maybe give them a call if I don’t receive it tomorrow…?

Thanks for all of the suggestions :] I’ll be looking for a place off-campus close to school =p

You mean the letter of admission package where they tell you they’ve admitted you?

Does anyone know if they send you a package after you sign your SIR (information on tuition, costs, FAFSA, housing applications, etc…) and maybe a to-do list?

macrandle: I received the same, a letter confirming my acceptance and a booklet describing the ten colleges. That came to my house roughly a week after online acceptance (online: Oct 1, mail: Oct 7). I have received nothing else thus far.

If you poke around on your myUCSC, you’ll find estimated costs along with expected family and student contribution. Mine currently states I have over $16,000 in need left to be met for the next two quarters after my expected contribution, but I have yet to receive any information about Financial Aid. I cannot even report the scholarships I have as “access is not yet available for this aid year” or something along those lines the system told me. Since no one else seems to have received this, my guess is we will not have this information until later in the quarter (or semester for those of you on that system).

I have already spoken with housing due to a concern I had about college affiliation versus obtaining the room type I wanted. I was told that after our college affiliation is assigned (I believe I read mid-November on myUCSC?), then we will receive information from housing. We will not have access to the online application until then. I was also told that a lot of the necessary information would be given at Winter Orientation, but I am hoping they do not intend to have us wait until December 11 as I believe payment is due by December 17.

I regularly check my to-do list on myUCSC and I recommend for anyone else to do the same (also, I would regularly check your ucsc.edu email if you already have access). I currently only see two to-do items that were “completed” before I even submitted my SIR (FAFSA and confirming my residency). The only other thing you should be doing that is not listed as “to-do” in the to-do list is to gather up transcripts needed. We have until February 15, but I recommend getting them as soon as possible for the schools you can. For example, I already picked up my high school ones to save myself the headache later.
