If you have to choose one for your undergraduate between these two, which one would be your choice? whether in-state or out-state stdents. Thanks a lot.

They’re quite different, so you need to base them on your future plans and your interests/tolerances. For example, if you want to major in Business, you’d definitely want to go to Penn State instead; however, if you want to major in Biology, then UCSD is the place to go. And if your academic interests don’t help in deciding, then look at your interests/tolerances: Do you absolutely have to go to a school with a football team? Can you stand cold weather? Etc.

I’m a BioE major, so UCSD was a no-brainer for me.

I would have to agree. Penn State is a party school with awesome sports. UCSD is not a party school nor do they have awesome sports. UCSD is academic and near the beach. What is your intended major? Do you love sports? Do you prefer having all four seasons or beach weather year round? Also where do you live? Are you OOS for UCSD?

Penn State has a great atmosphere with many fantastic programs.

UCSD has a great atmosphere (weather wise) and has many fantastic programs.

Both have their strengths and weaknesses.

UCSD definately!

Ranking is higher than PSU

It depends on your major, but if I were a CA resident I'd stick with UCSD. (Cheaper tuition, location, etc.)

it's so much harder to get into UCSD than Penn State's main campus, trust me.

People get into Penn State here with a 3.4 weighted and SAT of 1650+

^
Uh, I highly doubt that's the right way to pick a school. The misconception that the harder a school is to get into = definitely the better school for everybody definitely needs to be dispelled.

Like others said, it depends on your area of study as well as how well you fit in each school. Personally, I would recommend visiting both and seeing how you like each, and then making your decision.

I would really only recommend Penn State to people who are adament about attending a school with undergrad Business.

UCSD seems to be generally better for every other major department of study.
