Is it true that UCSD has a better engineering program the UCLA…is this information true because i am having confusion in deciding between the two?

no i heard ucla has a better engineering program... you heard wrong...
my cousin goes to ucla engineering and he says its ranked really high for that program

Shahwaiz,

It depends on the major. If you got accepted to the Biomedical engineering program at UCSD, you may want to take a close look at what the UCSD department offers.

You should visit the Engineering schools at both UCSD and UCLA, attend classes, talk to professors and students in the departments, and then make your own decision.

Good luck!

it could be tthey are both pretty equal

overall ucla has a better academically ranked in majors

IT DOESNT MATTER WHAT SCHOOL YOU GO TOO! BOTH ARE GOOD

what does matter then, what your experience is, what PROVEN skills you have, most companies will take a 2.75gpa student who has good references and proven abvility over a 3.7gpa who studied and did nothing.

They are about equal in engineering overall...but UCLA seems like a funner place.

ucla has a better social life too

I’m pretty sure UCSD does.

Which engineering major are you looking at? Some majors are better than UCLA and some are worse.

Aerospace Engineering - UCSD (17) is better then UCLA (20)

I was accepted to UCSD UCLA and UCB.
I SIR to UCSD

UCLA - Aerospace Engineering has only 50 kids in a year (200 in department from Fresh to Seniors) After Open House I discovered that engineering school is only attached to famous UCLA school.

UCSD - Aerospace Engineering has 200 kids (1000 in department)

UCB didn’t have Aerospace Engineering. I got to Mechanical Engineering. I was interview for Regent Scholarship but I didn’t get.

I got accepted into Aerospace at UCLA and got an email from UCSD that said…
Dear UC San Diego Engineering Sciences Applicant:

Thank you for applying to UCSD and the engineering sciences major in the department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Unfortunately, this major is no longer active and will not be taking any new students. We encourage you to consider changing your major selection to the engineering sciences major in the department of Structural Engineering or another major on the San Diego campus. Please inform me of your major changes no later than Wednesday, Dec. 7. If I do not hear from you by this date, your application to UCSD will be cancelled and a refund will be processed in 8-10 weeks.

Sincerely,

I switched from aerospace to electrical.

@Seniorsfo, you are way to into ranks. 20 vs. 17? I wonder what the actual difference is between that. Oh, and who actually decides the ranks? and what did you use US News? They aren’t the only site that ranks colleges in the world.

I chose UCLA over UCSD, but my decision might be biased because I live in SD. I’ll admittedly say that regardless of a 3 rank difference, UCSD might have better opportunities for Engineers solely based on location. UCSD did have a better Open Engineering seminar in my opinion, but UCLA actually has a college campus, nice environment, and can help me out more, for me personally.

vietdad “You should visit the Engineering schools at both UCSD and UCLA, attend classes, talk to professors and students in the departments, and then make your own decision.”

he is wise :)

UCSD - Aerospace Engineering is impacted major - limiting enrollment, only the best students are taken. My WGPA is 4.63 and UWGPA is 4.00. You need to finish AP Calculus in order to apply to Aerospace Engineering.

Impacted majors @ Jacobs School of Engineering are:
Aerospace Engineering
Bioengineering
Bioengineering: Biotechnology
Mechanical Engineering

At UCLA I met students who got to Aerospace Engineering without strong math. They started major with pre-calculus.

UCSD just recently appointed a new chancellor, who happened to be the former dean of engineering @ purdue. This may or may not be significant in the short term, but you can expect the eng dept’s quality to go up considerably.

Sent from my ADR6300 using CC

Edit: Actually He was Dean of Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University; my apologies

[First Look at UC San Diego?s 8th Chancellor, Pradeep Khosla](http://ucsdnews.ucsd.edu/features/first_look_at_uc_san_diegos_8th_chancellor_pradeep_khosla)

If you’re doing bioengineering go ahead and pick UCSD. SD is creme de la creme in that area and many of my friends have chosen UCSD over UCLA for bioengineering. Very understandable. For other majors, I’d say UCLA is more recognized than UCSD and even if UCSD is 2-3 rankings above UCLA in some things in some random magazine, UCLA has a better name in things SD hasn’t established a top rep in like it has with bioengineering. Also, most of my friends complain social life at UCSD is not great, but I find UCLA’s social scene great.

seniorsfo, that’s exactly why UCLA’s engineering program is regarded as better. There are less students here, acceptance into the program is harder, and the smaller the size the more resources they can devote to each student. English doesn’t seem to be your first language, so maybe you are a very gifted international (assuming gifted because you got an interview for Cal Engineering Regents), but usually as far as US universities go, the smaller the student body, the better it is since you get more attention.

If you’re talking about CSE, UCLA has a better program than UCSD. I know a couple people who are/have transferred from SD to LA for CSE.

visit both and go where you feel better at. but UCSD overall engineering is little bit better.

Cal Poly all the way! Though if I had to choose between those two, I’d go UCSD

Just choose whichever you see yourself happier. Rankings don’t mean much when they’re so close together.
