UCSD Class of 2021 Waitlist (Freshmen)

Hey guys! Just got waitlisted to UCSD and I am pretty suprised considering that I thought I would get rejected. I just confirmed my option on the waitlist. Is there a waitlist essay that we need to submit? Apparently previous years had one but I can’t seem to find it in the portal.

Ditto. My DD is wait listed but did not see anything about waitlist essay. Is it an option only for a few?

@smilydaisy From my knowledge, it was recquired by everyone on the waitlist last year

Hey, got waitlisted too. I didn’t see a waitlist essay option too.
Maybe they don’t have one this year?

@west123 Yeah, maybe. Is UCSD your top school atm?

Yeah, it is. Hopefully we both get in

My D was wait listed. Crushed, given that the odds are pretty bad. UCSD was her top choice. We live just 15 mn from UCSD. Now she most likely will have to go out of town. My S had the same issue 4 years ago, but that year nobody from waitlist was accepted. He ended up at UCI (about to graduate)
Her Stats: UC Capped GPA: 4.18, ACT: 33, Great ECs. Major Psychology.
She applied for the wait-list right away. More agonizing wait now… .

Can anybody find stats from previous year on wait list odds?

I also got waitlisted and I didn’t see a waitlist essay either. I hope they don’t make us do one. It is possible that they might have chosen a limited amount of students for waitlist. My major was Biological Sciences and I accepted my waitlist offer.

@longwait2 if there’s space, do they choose people off the waitlist by whoever applied first? by our stats (sem 2 grades)? Is ther lik a specific way they choose?

@sumrit17 I don’t think they chose a limited amount of students for waitlist because I know some people who has really low stats but still got waitlisted.

@west123 Then I guess they don’t have a waitlist question…but that is pretty odd.

How do they rank students? is it based on how competitive the applicant is or how soon they accept a spot on the waitlist?

fingers crossed!

@yourguardian: Not sure. It varies by year. I assume it is based on majors. In a way I am happy there is no essay to write this year. That essay was like begging for a spot, for a second chance.

@longwait2 I’m so sorry to hear that! I’m a bit surprised since she and I are equally good candidates on paper and I got in – maybe it has something to do with the major and the essays. My advice would be to really put a lot of energy into whatever they have her do next. I was a borderline candidate so they had me write another essay in January and that got me in, probably.

I applied as Mechanical Engineering and I ended up getting waitlisted. whatre the chances ill get in?

@Hakumaito according to last year’s thread, students who were waitlisted with a engineering or highly impacted major were accepted as undeclared. I remember many of them not accepting the spot because it’s nearly impossible to change from undeclared to an impacted major

From Ms Sun’s UC Blog:
Seems like San Diego has dropped the waitlist statement this year, so simply click the button to opt in.

That’s interesting Gumbymom. I wonder if they have wait list applicants ranked like SLO.
