Hi there! This is my first time posting on CC. I know that some of these questions has been addressed a lot, but I'm still very confused.

I'm taking Chem 6A and Warren Writing 10A. These two classes says that it requires a UCSD custom textbook, but is that really necessary? Can I just buy one that is not custom since it's cheaper? How different are the two versions, and if I buy a non-custom one, will it cause me any difficulties?
-Chem 6A: X* Principles of General Chemistry Vol 1, 2nd Edition w/ Aris card (UCSD custom)
-WCWP: Writer's Reference UCSD custom by Hacker

What is the aris card exactly? Do I need to buy it or will I be able to survive without one? I have Professor Czworkowski if it makes any difference. If I do need it, where can I buy one separately?

What is the WCWP 10A bundle (course reader + writer's reference)?

I also found the X* Principles of General Chemistry but 1st Edition really cheap. Will there be any major differences in this book if I use the 1st edition instead of the 2nd?

It would be cheaper to buy the used one even if it not custom and there is hardly any difference. It s just a slight revision. You can buy thr arid card from the company that published the book for 50 dollars. Sometimes you can buy it used but I don’t how that work. I would still go with the second edition to be safe.

For classes like chem or physics, you can get away with buying non custom textbooks/international editions. You might have ti buy an aris card for chem though. For warren writing, they create a reader every year with different articles depending on the topic. So you kinda have to buy it new (previous years’ readers won’t be the same). They also change the reader from quarter to quarter but those don’t change too much, so you could def sell it next quarter.

Thank you so much ngstar3125 and makman09 for answering.

So if I can’t find a previous student of WCWP to buy the reader from, I have no choice but to buy it from UCSD’s bookstore?

I also wanted to ask if we are able to share aris cards. I have a friend who is also taking Chem 6A, and if we can, we could split the cost of buying one. Is it possible we both use it? We don’t have to register it under someone, do we? What about sharing an aris card with someone who is taking Chem 6B or 6C?

If I remember correctly, they change the theme every year. So if you take it in fall, you’ll have to buy a new one. But they aren’t that expensive plus you can always sell it to someone taking 10a in winter.

Aris codes are one-use only and last for an entire year. You can’t split the cost with a friend if you’re taking the class together. I don’t know about situations like someone activating their code but not using it the quarter after – I suppose you could give it a go and see it if works first.

For chem, email the professor if they’ll be using ARIS for homework. My chem6a professor didnt use ARIS while the other professor did. Many times they bundle textbooks with the ARIS card to lower the price. If you plan on taking the whole series, you can get away with buying the whole textbook. The custom edition i believe is just the textbook split into parts so you dont need to purchase the whole book if you’re just taking the one class. But if your professor requires the ARIS card, you’ll have to purchase it separately. I"m pretty sure you can’t share it with your friend.

As for WCWP, you’ll definitely need to purchase it from UCSD. The articles in it changes significantly from year to year. If you purchase one now, it’ll be labeled Fall 2012. If you take it winter quarter, you’ll probably be able to get away with using the Fall 2012 one since it won’t change much from quarter to quarter, but you may need to photocopy pages from classmates. There is always an option of sharing one with a roommate or friend whos taking it in a different class. Thats what I did for WCWP10B and it wasnt too much of a problem.

I’ve heard it somewhere that it’s cheaper for you to buy the UCSD custom+ARIS at UCSD bookstore than buying a non-UCSDcustom textbook and an ARIS card separately. I am not sure though.
