UCSD experience? (Question for current students)

I am aware of the obvious characteristics about UCSD (no football team, good for science, questionable social scene, etc.) I would just really like to know from students what the UCSD experience is really like. Do people enjoy attending UCSD? Is there pride about your alma mater after graduation?
Is there a bond between the students? How is the dating scene? The more information, the better. Thank you for all your help!

I also would like to know!

My first year at UCSD has really been a pretty awesome experience. The weather is just perfect, and the scenery is beautiful. It has been academically challenging, leading to experimentation with polyphasic sleep schedules (haha) and the like, but it's not life destroying (except during midterms/finals). Food is pretty good, but you really have to know where to go and what to get. There are some pretty bad dishes at certain places, and you will quickly learn to avoid them.

The rumors of a lacking party scene are partially true. I'm not much of a partier, but it wasn't a dead campus by any means. Unfortunately, it is true that it is dead on the weekends. Downtown SD is pretty cool, and we always check out the eateries on the weekends.

Anywho, I have great pride in UCSD, and i don't see how that could change when i graduate.

Bond between students? Well, i've noticed that everyone is generally friendly. There is some competition, but it's not cut-throat. Don't take my word for it, I'm a CS major ;)

Sorry, no input from me on the dating scene. I'm taken, so i'd suspect if i had input it would be problematic. Lots of asian girls though, if that's your preference. If not, i'm sorry, because that largely what you'll find at SD.

Hope that helps.

About the food:

I went to Roberto's for Carne Asada fries last Saturday.

It's safe to say they'll be getting quite a bit of business from me next year.

^^
Yes, lots of asian girls. I'm going there for sure.

But i've HEARD that there aren't that many good looking ones there.

There many hot/beautiful/good-looking girls at UCSD; the only reason UCSD gets this reputation is because SDSU is known for their girls.

To oyama: There are so many great taco shops in east/southeast San Diego. I live on carne asada fries and whatever burrito I'm feeling that day.

OOO ok thanks for the info

What experience are you looking for?

I don't go to UCSD but I was accepted there and I live ~5mins away. Consequently, I've spent my fair share of time on the campus.

If you're into scenery and taking it easy in a mostly quiet area, UCSD is for you. If you're into parties, the social scene, completey friendly students (ie: not cut-throat in science courses), UCSD is kinda lacking.

Spend your first year in the dorms. W/ lots of ppl around you're bound to meet some friends you click with.

When you're 21 years old, hit up PB/Gaslamp.

i can see that some spaghetti clarification is in order. first let me clear up some misconceptions made by some of the guys above.

to be blunt and rude ucsd does not have pretty girls. all these optimistic comments about ucsd having pretty asian girls and blah is so far from the truth you'll all be crying when you see our student population in the fall. yes there's a lot of asian girls but are they hot? if you are partially blind, perhaps. if you have good taste then no. i am asian myself so don't credit me with racism here.

sdsu = hot white girls
ucla = hot asian girls
ucsd = o NOES!!!!!!111!!!!!

i will admit though that each year the administration is admitting prettier girls. in about 15 years ucsd may look like ucla. it's ok to dream.

now to answer the thread starter:

there's definately a general dislike of the school. this dislike is more emphatic among socal students. socal students (as in la/orange county students) either drop out and go the cc-> ucla route or go home to la or oc every weekend in a desperate attempt to distance themselves from sd. to answer your bond question, no, i don't think there is a strong bond between students here at ucsd. is there pride about our alma mater? definately not. dating scene i'd say is good only because we are located in la jolla. there's a lot of hot people in san diego, just not at UC san diego.

ok i really need to sleep now.

9 out of 10 girls in California are hot, but the tenth one goes to UCSD. That should sum it up for you guys at UCSD regarding the girls there.

I'm getting really tired of the ugly girls thing. It makes you sound really stupid.

I thought there were quite a few VERY pretty Asian girls at orientation, however.

There seems to be a lot of hottie incoming freshmen this year.

i thought the girls were okay @ orientaiton...none of them stood out in particular, but they weren't THAT bad.

Reposted as I'm sick of this male ego fest:

Those speaking of the hotness of girls @ SD:

At orientation, it was pretty clear that the guys are a far uglier standard than the girls at SD...and this is a guy speaking...thats how obvious the difference is.

It's the women that got it bad, not the men. The men should be happy they're so well off XD.

why is it that everything has to turn into how ucsd has not-so-hot girls? blehhhh

Well I really hope that's not true...there has to be a pretty large group of good looking girls out of 20,000 undergraduates!

But yea, from what I saw at orientation it's the girls that have it pretty bad, not the guys. Oh well, less competition! haha

damn, too bad sd has a bad rep about the chicks.

oh well.

My purpose in asking the question was to find out about the comprehensive undergrad experience, not just to find out how hot everyone is. San Diego has plenty of places to meet girls/guys, and I think we are all aware by this point that ucsd is not known for its ultra-attractive student population. Got it.
