UCSD FALL 2016 TRANSFER THREAD

@lenocturne it works now. :slight_smile:

Hey guys! I transferred to UCSD back in Fall 2014, and started a post in the UCSD section. If anyone has questions for a current student who went through the transfer process hit me up.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-san-diego/1853381-anybody-have-questions-for-a-current-student.html?new=1

Chance me please.

Major: CS in BS
GPA: 3.95 (one B in physics: mech)
Requirements: missing CSE 15L(Software Tools), CSE 21( Mathematics for Algorithm), and CSE 30 (Computer Organization)
CSE 15L and CSE 21 -> no course articulated in my cc
CSE 30 -> no reason.

EC: hackathon participation, club, volunteer
Essay: did my best.

I am worrying about those three missing requirements.
Would they jeopardize admission?
Really wanna go UCSD!!

@#122

I think it normally wouldn’t be such a big deal for UCSD, but considering you are trying to major in Computer Science, a very impacted major, you absolutely want to have 100% of all your major requirements completed by the end of spring this year. Having the major req’s are more or less mandatory for engineers. Even though UCSD “does not” require you to have them done, it will definitely your hurt chances of getting admitted. I have heard they don’t mind applicants missing 1 major req, but anything more than that looks bad.

Also, as per other things you must have completed by the end of spring for UCSD:

Coursework
All units must be completed by the end of spring term, prior to fall admission

-Complete a minimum of 60 UC-transferable semester (90 quarter) units
-Complete the UC-transferable college courses below with a C grade or better in each course. Each course must be 3 semester (4-5 quarter) units.
- 2 English composition
- 1 mathematical concepts and quantitative reasoning
- 4 courses from at least 2 of the following:
- Arts and humanities
- Physical and biological sciences
- Social and behavioral sciences

GPA
UC San Diego requires a competitive GPA (minimum 3.0) in UC-transferable courses and good academic standing.

Major Preparation
If you are applying to a capped major, you are strongly encouraged to complete all lower-division major courses prior to transferring.

@ecwolf2016 Thanks for your response.

As you mentioned, major requirements are very important for CS major.
But, the major requirements on the school website is little bit different from the ones on assist.org. which have more requirements. I completed all the requirements on the school web site, but missing 3 on the assists.
I assume that school website requirements are literally “required” and assist.org includes additional requirements.

Is Cognitive Science impacted at UCSD?

@csplzplz I guess you’ll be fine without the CSE 30 requirement, at least that’s what the representative from UCSD told me at my CC. She told me to at least take a course in Java, and that’s what I did. I did not take the CSE 30 equivalent even though it’s offered at my CC.

chance me please?
took a semester at UCSC and decided to transfer via community college to UCSD…not sure if that will sway my chances positively or negatively.
my parents are alumni and currently on faculty, so i’m hoping that helps as well!

Major: Global Health
GPA: 3.812
Requirements: n/a
EC: listed all community service (150 hours), part-time jobs, and sports for activities
Essay: 8.5-9/10 is my guess

@cyan96 Oh…I should have taken CSE30 in my cc. So, did the representative say that missing CSE30 is critical?
I am so worried…

@csplzplz All she said was to at least take CSE 11. In fact, let me quote the email sent by an advisor from CSE:

"Side Note: We have been seeing many transfer students retaking courses at UCSD since their Community College didn’t prepare them well for UCSD CSE courses.

Recommendation: Save your higher level CSE programming courses to be taken at UCSD (ex. CSE 12 or CSE 30)."

How screwed are my chances for CS in BA since I’m missing 1-2 of the sciences (I took a calculus-based classical mechanics 5 years ago that I imagine will count for 2A). Otherwise, I’ve completed the entire math series at cc along with a CSE11 equivalent. CSE20 equivalent currently in progress, and there are no articulated courses available for the rest. My GPA is ~3.9 (4.0 in all my CS classes…I got one B in Calc III)

I feel like an idiot for completely misreading assist. I still have time to enroll for for cc classes this semester. If I can clear the mechanics class, I might be able to sign up for a PHYS 2B equivalent; the problem is that I’ve forgotten everything from that mechanics class. I don’t know if it’s worth the hassle, and I’ll have missed the first week of classes.

Also, I notice they don’t list any sciences for the 2017 require major prep – http://admissions.ucsd.edu/transfers/prep-programs/transfer-major-preparation.html

@microt Have you tried taking Chemistry?

I haven’t taken any college chemistry classes, but I suppose that’s another option. I could sign up for a chem 1a equiv and hope they accept my prior physics class for 4a.

So I read that UCSD got a lot more applications with their deadline extension. Are they going to accept a proportional amount of extra students or are everyone’s chances of acceptance a lot lower now?

Major: Economics
GPA: 3.32
TAG: No
IGETC: Will be completed in spring 2016
Pre-reqs: Completed
EC:Internship at a Law Office
Have been in Dean’s Honor list for the past year and a half if that makes any difference lol.

Overall, feeling unconfident due to the low GPA and reading other peoples EC, some of those people might as well just put down that they saved a kid from Africa or something.

Yea, don’t think I will get in LOL

@sbrapunzel yeah, i’m worried about that too. I think that since the UC system is accepting more students this year (5000 over all UCs if i’m not mistaken), they wanted more applicants. If they would have just accepted more students, then we would have had a better chance, but since they also extended the deadline, I think our chances stay the same as they were before all of the changes

Hi everyone! We’re about one month away from the first batch of decisions, exciting stuff. Any sociology majors here? I’m a returning student after 12 years off, and have maintained a 4.0 gpa since I’ve come back to CC, however, some bad grades from 12 years ago followed me and brought down my gpa. I’m hoping they take that into account. I was told by a former UCSD admissions employee that they don’t read personal statements. I read the average GPA for transfer applicants this year was 3.36, hoping for the best. Good luck, everyone!

Major: Sociology
GPA: 3.49
Major GPA: 4.0
U-link: No
IGETC: Complete at the end of this spring
Pre-reqs: Completed

I hope I’m in the first wave of decisions next month! UCSD is my third choice but I love San Diego. And it’d be nice to have some piece of mind; I won’t hear from my first two choices until the end of April (UCLA & UCB).

Major: Philosophy
GPA: 3.90
Major GPA: 4.0
IGETC: Complete
Pre-Reqs: The one pre-req is not offered at any community college within my district.

@bonjouruc2016 Did you do academic renewal? Anyways, I am inclined to say you’ll be accepted with that GPA and incredible upward trend (they DO take upward trends into account). You have a very strong shot.

@bonjouruc2016 I’m not a sociology major but I am also a returning student with similar circumstances: strong upward trend GPA after being away from school for over a decade with a new major to boot. I’m not sure if UCSD admissions office takes age diversity into account. If they do then perhaps that will weight in our favor against some of those bad grades from way back when.

Does anyone know how the batches of decisions are split up?
