@caltonde: UC’s do not give local area applicants priority like the Cal States but you are definitely a competitive applicant and I wish you the best of luck.
Do you guys know if UCSD will take ECs and Personal Statements into consideration for admission? I’ve heard in the past they didn’t, but now since there are so many competitive applicants, I do not see why they wouldn’t.
CC Transfer -
Major: Cognitive Science *With a Specialization in Computation
UC GPA: 3.57 - probably more around a 3.5 after this semester
EC’s: Honestly not much. I work two jobs & help with family a lot because I have a single mom and three younger siblings (which I put in my application).
I don’t think there are any required prereqs for cognitive science (only cognitive and behavioral neuroscience?). Please correct me if Im wrong. I know there are recommended course listed on assist and I’m only missing some math classes for the major.
Hi everyone! I’m applying as a CCC transfer after having spent my freshman year at a four year university I didn’t like. I was admitted to UCSD as a freshman after being waitlisted and wish I’d taken them up then but oh well lol. Here are my stats!
Major: Political Science- Public Policy
IGETC: Will be finished by the end of spring 2018, just one science class left
Major pre-reqs: All done
GPA: 3.86
Major GPA: 3.85
Extracurriculars: don’t want to get too into details with these as they could make me potentially identifiable but I did a lot at my first school and I’ll be continuing with my involvement wherever I end up. I’ve held two internships related to my field, one of which I’ve been working in since the summer. Some volunteer hours but not a ton unfortunately.
Essays: 7/10- definitely not my best but I think I managed to share my story and experiences in a fairly compelling way.
@lovelei Hi lovelei, I am also majoring in cognitive science with the same specialization! Don’t worry dude! I triple checked with the UCSD transfer admissions department and they said that since it’s not an impacted major, it is not required to finish any prereqs but complete the UC general requirements. Hope to see you in the same class or department!
Major: Cognitive Science (Specialization in Machine Learning and Neural Computation)
IGETC: Will be finished by the end of spring 2018
Major pre-reqs: missing cal III and linear algebra
GPA: 3.79
Extracurriculars: a part-time job at Denny’s, volunteered in student government, and a few clubs.
Essays: 8ish/10- I am pretty confident about it because of how much I wrote about how I interested and involved I am in my major.
I heard that if you take English and Math classes during the spring semester will affect your chance to get into UCs. It is basically because they only look at your grade before fall and most of the UCs care about English and Math classes A LOT. My current GPA is 3.7 and majoring in Communication. My number 1 UC is UCSD. I took my first English class and Math in fall sem, but I still need one more English. I plan to take my second English class in spring sem. Anyone knows if that will affect the chance I get accepted to UCSD?? Anyone got accepted to UCSD and took their English class in spring sem before transfer?
@jasonhey I don’t think it matters bud. I am in the same position as you, are and I am pretty sure that they don’t mind taking English in spring. I heard UCSB is kind of strict about it but not harsh. Plus, UCSD is a big school, and I think that if anyone managed to get 3.5 or above has a solid chance of making it there. The UCSD representatives that I talked to said that the cut-off this year is 3.5.
Never mind
CC Transfer
Major: Computer Engineering
GPA: 3.72
IGETC: Missing two courses from Arts and Humanities and one course from social and behavioral science
Pre-Reqs: Will complete all by Spring 2018
ECs: Participated in my CC Stem and Physics club building projects using C++ and building circuits, creating a project at home using same aspects, volunteered 250 hours at a hospital, worked part-time and multiple positions.
Essays: 7/10 I feel like some of my essays were good and others were decent.
Major: Political Science
GPA: 3.52
CCC: DVC
Major GPA: 4.0
Major Prep: All done except for one class that I’m taking now
IGETC: Will be finished by end of spring, have one more science class left to take, and my arts credit to finish.
TAP: No
ECs:
-Kumon Tutor- work 15 hours a week
-Tutor local elementary school students
-stay home and take care of 10 year old sister, both parents work.
PIs: Had them checked in Berkeley drop in sessions, counselor last time said they were good, and I was a competitive applicant.
Applied: UCLA, UCB, UCSD
I am transferring in one year, so I took 12 units in summer, 19 in fall, and 20 this semester, AP credit is pulling me over to 68 credits. The reason my GPA is so low, is because I got a D in my Microeconomics course over the summer, I took a three week class that coincided with my high school graduation and finals week, but the rest of the classes during the summer were all A’s taken over the regular 6 week period. I explained this on my application as well.
Not sure how I’ll do in admissions though, would love some input.
Thanks!
Wait how did you guys pick and alternate major? I don’t remember it giving me an option to choose an alternate one. What happens if I didn’t? Do I still have a shot at them accepting me as an undeclared?
Also, does UCSD only accept students as “undeclared” when they applied to a noncapped major? I’m asking because I applied for psychology, but I’m missing a ton of prereqs. My target schools were Berkeley and LA, which have much different prereqs for psychology.
Hi guys! I got into UCSD via appeal in 2016 and I wanted to offer encouragement to those who might consider that process in the future Best of luck to you all!
@quaivoltaire what were your stats and major when you appealed back then?
@Zappster California comm college transfer and Philosophy major w/ 3.93-3.95 GPA. Also high school dropout, so they asked about that. There was an error with my application that resulted in it not having been read initially (i.e., a screw-up with reporting units that made me look like a sophomore transfer).
hey guys! Will half of us be notified of admission results by the middle of next month? I checked the 2017 transfer thread and it looks like some transfers were notified by that time. I also checked the UCSD transfer schedule and it states that transfers will receive their results starting from mid-March (March 10) through April. I applied for cognitive science with a 3.83 GPA. Do you think I will receive my results starting by mid-march? thanks!

@AdultSwimFan I would think you have a pretty good chance of hearing back in March as cognitive science is a non-impacted major and your GPA is above the 75% range listed on the UC Transfer by Major page for 2017. However, looking through last year’s transfer threads, there were some applicants who didn’t hear back early who I would’ve expected to but then did receive acceptances in April so if you don’t hear back in March I wouldn’t worry too much about it!
Hey. Just something I noticed on my portal… earlier there was a button that allowed me to switch my major choice and now it’s gone. I wasn’t planning on switching my major but I wonder why that option isn’t there anymore? Does anyone else still have that option on their portal?? I think that maybe I can’t switch cause a decision has already been made which is making me super anxious
Or maybe it disappears for everyone after a certain amount of time??
Also it says “Please complete the ITEMS CHECKLIST and FORMS listed below so we can finalize the review of your application.” … “finalize” … Like they’ve already reviewed it. Maybe I’m just freaking out over nothing but hopefully these are good signs!!
@lovelei I’m guessing the option isn’t there anymore because admission is based partly on major. I’m guessing they are now starting to seriously look at applications and so are limiting the new information that comes into admissions.
In terms of finalizing the review, I don’t know whether they’ve finished application review but I doubt they’ve finished most people’s. I think it just means that they want to review applications now (as decisions for some will be released in I think two and a half weeks) and they want to make sure that they have all of an applicant’s information so that they can do so.
I think that the first round will probably be released in 17 days going off of historical release dates. For those of you who are wondering, top applicants to non-impacted majors receive early acceptances on the same day that freshman applicants receive decisions. I think usually UCSD offers some early accepted students events on campus to try to incentivize top applicants to enroll. Don’t freak out if you’re an applicant to a non-impacted major that hasn’t heard back early- you may have a more complicated application or they may not have got around to yours, it doesn’t necessarily mean anything!
