I’m going to call the UCSD financial aid office on Tuesday, but I was hoping to get some info from here.
I am 33, married, and looking to transfer Fall 2018. I’m trying to figure out how much Tuition (Fees), I am likely to be responsible for so I can start saving. Here are my numbers.
Calculated EFC - 13000
Married Joint-Filing Adjusted Income - 57396 (My income is 7099)
So my questions are:
The Blue and Gold says incomes under 80k qualify for aid, so that is us, yes? Does this cover the $12630 for UC tuition, something else, or nothing in my case?
My wife and I already budget for housing/food/supplies and things, so tuition and fees should be the only expenses I’m looking for aid in. Does this matter when assessing financial need? Do they just assume that everyone will spend 30k/year and base it off that?
What should I reasonably expect to pay per/year for just tuition/fees?
Thanks for your time.
Nevermind, I see what’s going on here. The Blue and Gold is only to supplement your other grants, and is not a grant on its own. So I would have to qualify for some other grant, which does not look likely given my wife’s income. It seems like the best option is to get a divorce and get remarried after college. Sucks.
Don’t get divorced! You’d lose health insurance and it’s just not a good idea.
Is there an age restriction for B&G?
If not, then you will get free tuition since income is below $80k.
You will likely get a UC grant of about $14k. Since you don’t need money for living expenses, covered by wife, what is the issue???
Sounds like YOU earn enough to cover books and misc expenses.
You’re very lucky. Best wishes.
Have you tried https://sa-web.ucsd.edu/aidEstimator ? That may help you answer some of your questions so that you know what to ask if you need to ask UCSD directly for more information.
Thanks for responding. No we won’t get divorced. I was just being a little dramatic.
How can I get a grant if our income is over 40k? I thought that was the cutoff for a Cal Grant. Are there other grants that I will likely qualify for?
There are varying cutoffs for Cal Grants, but that’s irrelevant for you.
B&G promise is for under $80k. That means if you don’t qualify for CG, then they give you a UC grant
Oh right on. That’s great news. My wife has loans of her own so we were hoping not to pile onto that train. Thanks for the info! Cheers!
Have you run the Net Price calculator on UCSD’s website. This will at least give you an estimate.
https://sa-web.ucsd.edu/aidEstimator
Tuition and Fees+$15,683.00
Room and Board+$10,131.00
Books and Supplies+$1,521.00
Other Expenses+$3,581.00
Total Cost of Attendance $30,916.00
Grant Award:- $5,927.00
Estimated Net Cost: $24,989.00
I did and that is what got me concerned. It says grant aid is 6k, which I assume would go to fees, and then I’d be on the hook for for the other 8k since i don’t need room and board and the rest. But if I follow what mom2kids is saying than the B&G will supplement what ever grants I receive to pay for the rest of the system-wide fees. Then I’d be on the hook for the campus fees and probably a little bit more. Am I thinking right?
Basically I am looking to start saving for a guesstimate of what I will owe.
Is this estimate based on off-campus/living at home and commuting? If so, then I would say that you should get your Tuition and Fees covered between Cal Grant/B&G. As always, I like to err on the side of caution and try to save more than needed since with an EFC of $13,000, they still will expect some amount of family contribution.
My concern is …what are the req’ts for B&G and do you meet them? Did you graduate from a calif high school? Is there an age restriction?
What is the Blue and Gold Opportunity Plan?
The Blue and Gold Opportunity Plan ensures that eligible California undergraduates with an annual family income of up to $80,000 will have their systemwide - or base - tuition and fees covered by gift aid. As part of your Financial Aid package, you will be awarded enough Federal, State, University and/or private grants/scholarships to cover your base tuition and fees for the school year, however, it is important to note that no student will receive more grant support than their calculated financial need.
How do I apply?
To be considered, file your FAFSA or Dream Act Application no later than March 2 each year. For first-time applicants, you must also submit a Cal Grant GPA verification form to the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) by March 2. For details, please visit our Apply for Financial Aid webpage
How do I qualify and maintain eligibility?
To qualify and maintain eligibility you will need to meet the following criteria:
-An Undergraduate in your first 4 years of UC attendance (first 2 for transfers)
-A California resident or qualify for a nonresident tuition exemption under AB 540
-Your family earns less than $80,000
-Your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) is less than your Estimated Cost of Attendance
-Enrolled in at least 6 units (half-time)
With an EFC of $13,000, that amount should cover most of the tuition and fees, so if the UC’s determine that you can contribute that amount, most likely you may receive only the $6000 in grants. Can you calculate your costs without room and board on the NPC?
The issue may be that this is just a family of 2 people, one adult is the student.
Also, is the Cal Grant GPA req’t also an issue?

31k COA
12k loans
13k EFC
The remaining would be grant under $10k.
I think this may be the problem. The student qualifies for a lot of loans because of independent status.
I think that the $80k rule also includes a need req’t.

Why would he calculate w/o R&B. He would be considered as a student living off-campus. Not a student living with parents. His COA should include an estimate for his share of an apt and food.
@cjijuwecioujwec
When you ran the NPC, did you put “living at home”? If so, that really isn’t the right answer for you. You need to select off-campus. Can you rerun the NPC?
@mom2collegekids
Yeah, that’s the off-campus amount. The on campus EFC is 7100.
What??
Your FAFSA EFC does not change in regards to housing choice.
Something isn’t right.
Did you put "commuter’ or “off campus”?
You’re “off campus”. You’re not a commuter commuting from parents home.
I just ran it using your info…and on campus and off campus have about the same EFC.
