UCSD / Future MBA plans

So I will be attending UCSD (Class of 16) this fall as an undeclared major. I have been researching and although i'm not quite sure yet, I feel like I will ultimately want to achieve a MBA because that's what, at the moment, i'm leaning towards most. I would eventually like to work at one the Big 4 and work my way up, so I'd like a little advice in the path to get there from UCSD. I noticed that the trend seems to be major in Economics/Accounting/or Finance before going for the MBA but since I believe UCSD offers only Econ as a major, what would be the best to pair it with? What major/minor should i couple that will lead me to be the most marketable to graduate programs/as well as good pay. Would major Econ - minor Accounting be beneficial?

-Or even Management Science/Econ minor. If that's possible. Econ/Psych, MS/Psych?

UCSD also offers Management Science and Econ/Math in the Economics department. And Management Science pretty much is econ so you can’t make one a major and the other a minor.

Your major isnt very important if MBA is your goal.

Well in terms of something to fall back on/most opportunity for a nice salary. Which combo would work the best?

Econ/Poly Sci
Econ/Psych
Poli Sci/MS

there’s also business and accouting minors within the rady school, which can be viewed at rady.ucsd.edu

If you want to work for a top 4 accounting firm, I’d recommend either man sci or econ w/ an accounting minor. Personally, I would do an econ major because econ and man sci are essentially the same, just man sci requires more math. To employers, they’re basically the same. Poli sci honestly isn’t very relevant, but if you’re interested in the subject, it’s not a difficult major and a good gpa booster. As a poli sci minor, trust me, even the upper div classes are easy if you know the right professors.
As for psych, that isn’t that relevant either, even if you want to go into marketing.
Honestly, don’t stress out about your major/minor yet. you still have plenty of time the most important thing is to maintain a high gpa.

UCSD alum / Marketing Ph.D. student here.

I have to completely disagree with christee on the point of psychology not being relevant for marketing. Whether you study consumer behavior (behavioral marketing) or marketing modeling (quantitative marketing), the study of information search, information processing, and judgment and decision making is extremely important to the field.

Anyway, what Big 4 are you looking at? Accounting Big 4 (PWC, Deloitte, E&Y, KPMG) or Big 4 Management Consulting (McKinsey, Bain, BCG, Booz)?

If the former, economics will suffice. Just take extra courses to supplement the requirements to sit in for the CPA exam.

If the latter, major literally doesn’t matter. I’m at a top school right now and the MBA students here represent just about any major you’ve ever heard of.
