Hey,
So I was just wondering about the UCSD Medical Scholars Program. How many people get invited to apply to this program? How does it work? How do they determine which of the invited get to be a part of the program. I know that it's a pretty prestigious thing, since only 12 people get accepted into it every year, but does anyone have any other, specific information about it?

about 1500 eligible/invited
about 300 apply
25 selected for interview
12 accepted

If you are invited to apply does that mean you have been accepted to UCSD? The wording in the email is a little confusing.

Read the attachments to the e-mail which make pretty clear that only seniors who have been admitted to UCSD and meet the additional criteria are invited to apply.

Are there any scholarships associated with this program?

No money is associated with the program.

The real question is whether you can be a Med Scholar and a Regents Scholar, or a Med Scholar and a Jacobs Scholar.

why couldn’t you?

think anyone with the minimum requirements of 4.0 weighted gpa and 2250+ get the opportunity to apply.

sunfish, most Med and Jacobs Scholars are also Regents Scholars. I am confident no one has ever been a Med and Jacobs Scholar at the same time. Which makes sense – one encourages students to be doctors and the other encourages them to be engineers.

Just hope this offer to apply is a good indication that I will be accepted to UCSD…program would be great but I really want to get into UCSD

Actually, there is at least one UCSD Medical Scholar who is also a Jacobs Scholar. Also, 33dmjjm, if you got the offer to apply to this program, then you have definitely been accepted to UCSD. Congrats, and good luck! :)

I’m a medical scholar and there are at least 2 students who are both Medical and Jacobs scholars, so it is possible!

Also, if you have more questions about the ucsd medical scholar program, here’s the forum off of the website:

So in the next couple of years when seniors are searching these links please be advised just because you are asked to apply to the Medical Scholars Program does NOT mean you are accepted to UCSD. This year numerous students who were sked to apply for the program did not get accepted to UCSD.

Why do only 300 out of 1500 people apply?? Isnt this a prestigious program??

Well, sure. It’s also possible that these 300 that apply are also really strong students and may choose to attend a different school that they were applying too.

But Im asking like why do only 300 students apply to this program? I mean like why would only a small number of students out of those 1500 apply to this program?

Oh, I meant the 1500 that were offered, not the 300 who applied. Sorry.

First, not everyone wants to be a doctor.
For those who may consider becoming doctors, many realize that they do not have the desirable EC’s to compete in a BS/MD program.
Half of the 300 probably shouldn’t have applied because their chances are zilch.

Ohh now I see what you mean Adamantoise!!! And sunfish yes thats true I hadn’t thought of it like that!! Thanks!!
