UCSD Medical Scholars

hey pearapple, like stockguru92 said can u please post ur stats? it would be very helpful

i don't remember my exact stats, but here are the basics:
gpa w ~4.3
gpa uw 4.0
sat 2280
sat ii's math 790, chem 790, history 700
class council
academic league
community service --> helped organize local events like walkathons and remodeling of schools
hosp volunteer ~200 hrs
research intern (summer) on immunology and cancer

the most important thing is to have ec's/interests that support your reasons for going into medicine.

asianamy: I just used my passport picture, but you don't have to wear nice clothes or anything because they mostly want to see your face.

pearapple, did you send in a resume as well? ohohoh and do they look at your UC app? 'cause i didn't try as hard for my UC essays as i did for my private essays :( and i'd have updates on that app if anything..

pearapple, congrats on your achievements. I was also wondering about the same thing that eatsalot has asked. It does not seem like a resume is required, so would adding one be seen as extra and maybe make the people who look over the application materials think we are just sending in too much stuff? and, like eatsalot asked, do they look at your UC app?

i'm not sure if they use the uc application to decide who gets an interview, but i know they look at your uc application in the final decision. at the interview, they had my application and essays in front of them and asked about my uc app for the interview (to my surprise!). i didn't spend a lot of time on my uc essays either, so i wouldn't worry too much about it.

i didn't send in a resume (and i wouldn't b/c they don't ask for it), but i did mention my major activities in my essay. i talked about some of the activities listed in my uc application, so it's probably good if you have some connection b/n the 2.

i wouldn't send in any updated information, unless it is relevant and/or important. if you have any major updates, mention them in the essay. otherwise, just focus on showing your passion for medicine and don't stress about it too much!

If you play football and you think that'll help you get in, remember that UCSD doesn't have a football team. If you're trying to get in using a Sports/PhysEd-oriented approach, better say that you're an avid golfer (e.g., you like Torrey Pines, etc.). Or maybe your an expert at soccer. FWIW.

thanks pearapple!

Anything else beside essay plays important role on decision ? For example: SAT2, ACT, GPA etc once we get invited ?

Does anyone know if UCSD has sent out interview invitations or rejections yet? I got an email from UCSD on the 3/11 saying that they received my application (even though it was due on 3/13). Anybody know?

The application timeline says that applicants selected for interviews will be notified on March 23.

How will they notify us?
Email? Phone?

and if we didn't get selected, will they tell us as well? Or will they just never contact us again.. D:

For the Caltech-UCSD med program, which is very similar to this one as the med school is the same, they notified us via email. It came really late though so I wouldn't be surprised if UCSD is late again. But it will probably come next week.

On the timeline, there's a section for waitlisted people to apply... so there is still a chance if you're not one of the original 12?

according to the timeline... its today!
I'm waiting... :/

has anyone gotten one yet???
are you supposed to get an email regardless of whether you get rejected or invited to interview?

I'm waiting too :/
has anyone gotten anything yet?

update!
09serenity was right - they're late!
Just got an email saying that all interview candidates will be notified via phone by Thursday.

lol they called me like RIGHT when school ended last year. if its from the 858 youre good to go.

Did they call your cell phone or home phone?

And if we end up not getting selected for an interview, do we just not hear from them at all?
I think they should at least send us a "we regret to inform you" email so we can stop worrying...

im not sure which they called first. might have called home first since i vaguely remember having an answering machine message...but theyll prolly try both.

im pretty sure they email you. ive never NOT been emailed/mailed if i was rejected from something.
