I’m between these two. I plan on doing a psych major with a communications minor or a dual major. And I plan on maybe going to law school after college. Help?
Are the costs similar? What environment would you prefer?
Psychology is one of those majors that you can study pretty much anywhere. Both Syracuse and UCSD have good psychology departments. They both also have excellent communication programs/departments. You can go to law school after either of them.
But they’re really different environments - Syracuse is in upstate New York with just over 15,000 undergraduates, so a more medium-to-large school; it’s cold in the winters, and the school spirit is very high (especially around basketball). It’s got a reputation as a work-hard/play-hard “party school”. UCSD is in San Diego, so it’s warm year-round, and there are over 26,000 undergraduates so it’s quite a bit larger than Syracuse.
Have you visited? Can you visit either?
I already visited both and I like them both equally. Weather and campus I like UCSD more. School spirit and the social aspect of college I like more in SU. Syracuse is more expensive but I got financial aid/scholarship so I I would end up paying less for SU than for UCSD even though San Diego is considerably less expensive overall (I didn’t get any financial aid). I’m just worried I won’t get into law school after. @juillet
You can get into law school from anywhere - your LSAT scores and GPA are the most important components of that application. Where you go to school doesn’t matter so much, but in any event, Syracuse is an excellent school.
Are you in-state for UCSD? Would you have to borrow money to attend either of them? How much? How much is coming out of pocket?
I’m not in-state for either. I am from Peru so I’m an international student and will pay oos tuition for both.
My parents would pay for first year then the other 3 I would take student loans and pay them off in the future and possibly have a part time job while in college. @juillet
Wow you would be taking on a lot of debt. For SU, have you been admitted to the NewHouse school for communications? Would you attend law school in Peru? Is it free?
